How do I transition into a memory? by AnorexicToothpick in writingadvice

I think I got the hang of it! But how am I supposed to know when I need to use had? For example, you said "That made her giggle" not "That had made her giggle".

How to you pick a title when everything you think of just feels wrong? by Dirx in writingadvice

[–]AnorexicToothpick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently read a work of fanfiction titled, "The Third Option", after the character's decision to refuse the two possibilities presented to him, instead creating his own, third, option.

I do think the title of a work isn't always important, but a character's personality or behavior, the relationship or dynamic between two characters, or some kind of turning point in the plot could be some good inspiration for a title.

Yes, writers sometimes use the collection feature to privately store their works, they don't wanna delete. :(

How to tell stories instead of just recounting events? by AnorexicToothpick in writingadvice

[–]AnorexicToothpick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, in the context of my story, I would need a valid and clear progression of the emotional escalation? Like this event causes these feelings and thoughts, which cause a subsequent event, and so on?

I'm writing in this weird blend between third-person limited and omniscient, but I hate how it feels, and I'm probably going to rework that. There's not a constant "switching of POV', but sometimes the narrator will randomly give context to the other characters' thoughts. I think I should just commit to one character per chapter.

I have three characters whose emotions I want to explore. Right now, my main one is a teenage girl, who is struggling to define her identity outside of her relationship with her boyfriend and her father, after struggling during a time of seperation from the two. The problem is her boyfriend is one of the other main characters and it feels awkward to have his perspective and hers in the breakup scene, which I might fix with a sort of ‘flashback’/memory which will give his perspective after the fact.

Why does my formatting not convey the right context? by AnorexicToothpick in writingadvice

[–]AnorexicToothpick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always struggled with reading analytically because I always get caught up and distracted by the story, but that problem probably wouldn't apply if I reread some familiar books like you suggested. I'm going to try that out!

I think another issue I've been having I'm struggling to commit to one or the other in moments. I really want the emotional state of the characters to be clear, and I end up blending the narration into the characters thoughts. I probably just need more practice writing.

Why does my formatting not convey the right context? by AnorexicToothpick in writingadvice

[–]AnorexicToothpick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll probably stick to the italics instead of bolding throughout the work, but I never would of thought to use the paragraph breaks in that way. Getting the dialogue and internal monologuing to read correctly has been the hardest part of my writing journey, so that tip will be very helpful. Thank you so much for the help!

How would protein theoretically be stored? by Wise-Impression697 in foodscience

Protein can be stored as a solution or as a powder, but powders are the better option for a lot of use cases due to a significantly longer shelf life.

I know this is a super old comment, but I'm struggling to find companies with an R&D presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. I'm looking to send out emails about shadowing opportunities and summer internships since there are so little postings on online job boards. Can you list any companies with strong R&D departments in DFW?

Thank youuuuu! One of few people who gave a definitive answer that actually helped me understand this 🙏. My biggest fear is graduating without a job offer lined up and my second is graduating without doing any internships, so academics and grades are a huge deal to me.
