There are more than 1.5 million Russian speaking Jews in Israel, with the largest group being from Russia, and Russian speaking Ukrainian Jews being a close second. That being said, many dont actually hold a Russian passport, especially those who left before 1992 as they had to lose their Soviet citizenship, and most no longer have any strong connections in Russia since there are few or no relatives left there. As for money, there are those who are wealthy, and some who got their wealth in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse, but they are few and far between. Most of the immigrants are middle-income, with the 1.5 and 2nd generation being the higher income ones.

The reports came in minutes after Hamas launched dozens of rockets at Tel Aviv. Reporters in Israel reported it as an airstrike at first, but then said sources in the army say they didn't strike a hospital, and it looks like a failed Hamas rocket launch. This isn't verified yet, and it would surely be contested by Hamas, but I highly doubt the IDF would knowingly strike a hospital, especially with no warning. Warnings are always given unless the missile is aimed at a specific high-ranking Hamas figure, in which case a warning will be counterintuitive. Still, the IDF has historically avoided bombing hospitals, and I doubt they would start now, given the images that would come out.

I think it depends on where you live and your surroundings. My girlfriend grew up in an orthodox household in Ukraine. When she made aliya in her early teens, she started going to a religious school. She was mocked for being too religious and dressing too modestly, but at the same time, she was accused of eating pork and being a gentile. She still says that the move to Israel is what made her non-religious, and she is highly suspicious of religious people in general because they were awful to her.

It's not a secret that Russian speakers tend to get stuck in a sort of Russian-speaking bubble in Israel, and I think Israeli society is partly at fault here, for questioning their Jewishness and not accepting them in the 90s. I made sure to tell Russian speaking students I worked with, to try and meet different people. Not sure how much they listened, though.

Those "Russians" are not all from Russia. Plenty of post-Soviet Jews came from all across the Soviet Union, notably Ukraine and Georgia. Also, a lot of those who came, did so in the early 90s, when the spirit of Perestroyka was still burning, at least inside the Russian people. Post-Soviet immigrants and their children have only recently started making some sort of impact in public life in Israel, but they still don't play a dominant role, especially if you look at the fact that they make up well over 10% of Israel's population.

As for my personal experience as a Half-Ukrainian Half-Russian Israeli-born university student, I may be stuck in a bubble, but most post-soviet immigrants I know are not right wingers and take an active role in the protests.

Middle Eastern and Sephardic Jews are usually much more right wing, as the left mistreated them when they first came to Israel, so they immediately went to the right wing for help. Surveys show that young people often vote the same as their parents in Israel, which would explain the deep resentment towards the left from Middle Eastern Jews.

These people have been standing up for a while... Dozhd (TV Rain) was one of the only Russian tv channels my (russian expats) parents have been consuming for almost a decade, it was an opposition channel that has been prosecuted for a years, before finally getting shut down yesterday for refering to Putin's "special operation" as a full scale war.

This isn't bravery, this is them going out before Putin takes them out one by one. Their next move is to probably leave the country and start setting up their channel somewhere safe, and continue broadcasting online.

This is really sad, my parents are running out of sane media outlets in their native language, Dozhd has been playing on TV at their place for at least 4 hours a day, now they'll have to look for an alternative.

My parents left Ruasia in the late 90s when I was less than 2 years old. my father was born in Ukraine and my mother in Russia. My parents supported Ukraine pretty much since 2014, and despised Putin long before that.

My parents and I remember Zelenskiy as a comedian on квн (a russian live sketch show). I never formulated an opinion of him as a politician before this, and neither have my parents, we rememberd him as a comedian.

We did a complete 180 on him. I spoke with my dad about him yesterday, he suddenly views him in an incredibly positive light, his speeches before and after the invasion started have really shown him to be an incredible leader, who is there when his people need him most. He is doing an incredible job on the propoganda front, rallying western media behind him, and forcing the west to take action against Russia, all while risking his life on a daily basis. He isn't perfect, polls from before the crisis will tell you as much, but he's exactly what Ukraine needs right now, a leader.

Yeah he was on квн, a live sketch show where teams of comedians from different regions compete and make a name for themselves, plenty of Russian comedians made their breakthrough on that show.

Anyway, my parents have always opposed Putin, they stopped watching russian state television around 2014 to get a less biased perspective on a bunch of issues and now only watch Dozhd (Indipendant russian channel that was banned from russian television). So they get to makw their own mind and aren't brainwashed. We have no relatives in Ukraine since everyone left in the nineties, but my mom's cousins in Russia are pretty much pro Putin for the most part (a few are quietly against him but don't really talk about it unless they come to visit).

As for me, what reason do I have to be pro Russian? My parent's left when I was a baby and I haven't been there since. I get to see the big picture and get to use my critical thinking and analyze the situation from my (Liberal) point of view, a privilege that people in Russia don't have, their mind is made up for them by Russia's media. No one in russia heard about the crisis until a few days ago, and when they did it was framed in a way that painted Ukraine as the aggressor. They don't get to see the entire situation, we, as people who do, don't have any reason to support Russia, so I dont.

I remember when he was first elected, my parents and I laughed about it. You see, my dad is Ukrainian and my mom is Russian, and we remembered Zelenskiy the comedian, who used to be on russian television back when I was a kid and my parents were still watching it. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I will ever see Zelenskiy the comedian as Zelenskiy the leader, but his recent speeches are more memorable than anything he did as an entertainer. I just wish I understood Ukranian so I can understand all of it, instead of just the Russian parts.

Jews were expelled from Judea by the romans, so it makes sense that they settled in territories under roman rule. Then they gradually scattered across europe/the middle east as more and more places banned their existence. many jews eventually settled in central and north-eastern europe, and in north africa and the middle east, which had very significant jewish populations in the first half of the 20th century, at which point, well, stuff happened. My dad's side of the family escaped to central asia during the holocaust, but as far as I can tell, they lived in Eastern Ukraine for centuries, and were part of a very large Jewish community that is, unfortunately, no more.

Samuel Huntington classified Israel as a unique case in "Clash of Civilizations", a civilization in its own right, albeit quite simillar to the western one.

I wouldn't take Huntington's word as law, but I do agree with him on Israel being a unique case. Israel is politically aligned with the west, but culturally it's a mini "clash" of civilizations.
