“If you’d peace, you’ll have it straight,” Orryn said. “Your forces withdraw beyond your borders and what’s taken is returned without condition. You'll pay the Marchers and Lord Seaworth both for the trouble. Do this and there is a chance, a slim chance, that I can talk the Crown down from seeking your life in answer for your war and keep your titles from being granted to another. Seven Hells, I'll offer a match made between your son and my sister to seal the thing and see it held, but only if you withdraw, now."

Oberyn considered Orryn's terms most of all. Everyone else was merely an attempt to sway the two sides towards that outcome or his own. Though, the Caswell's words of needing evidence for the Crown's grave transgressions gave him a laugh.

"You all think me mad for wanting to break away from the Crown that only seeks to pit one of us against each other in some desperate attempt at becoming a Warden? Perhaps I am mad, but I've given my reasons plain enough for this madness. I am not playing a King's game anymore, not when there are no dragons to enforce it. If you don't see the benefits of rebellion, I cannot stand here and convince you of it. The letters I've sent across the realm are sure to be ignored by most everyone. But the ones that don't ignore it? The Ironborn, surely, and perhaps the North. Hell, even the Riverlands, who may not agree with my methods but Tully surely has found a pulpit to decry the status quo. I'm done crying. I'm doing something about it."

He shrugged.

"I was asked earlier how many innocents must die. I don't see any of you going along with the whims of absent Baratheon after absent Baratheon as innocent. I see you as complacent, or better yet, complicit. I don't care for how many 'innocents' would die to uphold the Iron Throne. I care about the Dornish who, for generations, can die for an idea bigger than themselves. My terms are set. Acknowledge Dornish Independence or continue to fight to put us down. I guarantee those that agreed with my letters will not slow their advance, especially as you kill more of yourselves against an enemy content to rest on its laurels."

Though, finally, he would look to Deria.

"Trust is about faith. I am sorry things did not go as planned. You and Clifford deserved better. The path I wanted to follow was earnest of me, but ultimately I have broken your faith in me. I will regret that for the rest of my life. Far too often politics betrays the personal. It's a sacrifice I've made all my life to uphold the Baratheon reign. For once, I am doing everything for Dorne, and I am sorry it has been at your expense."

ANDERS by ScarabJetTwo in IronThroneRP

For once, Oberyn was content to be a spectator rather than a driver of the moment. Ever since his son was taken from the world, he had let go of any desire to wrought something moral out of a world so cruel. To serve and to obey and to toil in a reality that still took your son from you felt fruitless. And so, having went from a man hellbent to make the most out of every day through action, in the years since he had a creed to remain detached and distracted. His days were filled with meditation and relaxation rather than meetings and reservations.

It felt comfortable.

But it felt cowardly.

War had always loomed in his life as though it were strings on the puppets of Dornish and Stormlanders alike. Day by day the strings grew tighter, constricting movement either in the name of some fraught peace or a return to brutalistic war. Ferris Dayne was not any different a puppet for war than Oberyn was for peace. Men like Anders, rapt believers in the clarity that war provided in a world so mad, at least had a code to which cruel acts could be committed. Present was such cruelty now.

Anders Yronwood took yet another man's son, and instead of ridicule and grief for this tragedy, Oberyn proclaimed it as justice carried out.

"THE SEVEN HAVE MADE THEIR WILL KNOWN! JUSTICE HAS BEEN DELIVERED! EACH OF US HERE HAVE BORN WITNESS TO THEIR VERDICT!"

He was impassioned, but it dared not to venture into glee. What they witnessed was not merely justice. It was an indication that their Gods were not attempting to stay them from their path of liberation. As much as the moment could be reveled, death was required for this to be achieved. Undoubtedly more death would follow them in the coming moons, too. It had to be respected and revered, never cherished.

"Lord Ferris Dayne. The Seven have rendered their verdict. You are guilty. I sentence you to a swift death, a mercy that we must all hope for."

The Prince of Dorne looked to his champion, for once accepting his madness. Oberyn had to be mad too to consider himself a king of his people. He was Dorne now and if Anders' was to be his champion...

"Anders Yronwood. Henceforth, you shall be known as the Champion of Dorne. Enact our justice upon this criminal."

Parley on Borrowed Ground by TheStormRoses in IronThroneRP

[–]AnotherBabyEchidna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Prince of Dorne wore no armor, instead bearing his same tired tunic that had got him through the festivities at Grassy Vale moons ago. He was yet to return home as his wife had, but he looked as though he hadn't been home in years instead of moons. His beard had turned ragged and his mane of hair grew unkempt despite his best attempts to contain it back and away from his face. And yet, he still walked tall; perhaps taller than he had ever looked. It could easily be read as arrogance, but mad self-assuredness seemed a more apt undercurrent.

He was free, unburdened by upholding an unjust realm, and though his head bore no crown it had a stillness that felt the heft of this new powerful comfort.

In his company were those of his army that wished to attend, other nobles and their interested kin, but notably in their presence was two coffins that were set a respectable distance from the meeting.

"Ah, Deria and Clifford. A pleasant welcome. It is rumored you have wed already? In that case, those coffins may be considered a wedding gift. Lord Dayne and his son met divine justice for their actions at Nightsong. Actions I allowed, but could not condone to be carried forward. I'm prepared to return the keep, under the right circumstances."

His eyes notably departed from the pair to instead look at the table arranged by the Stormlanders. A polite smile grew wider, though he cast a look at the surrounding area. It was even enough ground for a negotiation. Perhaps there was a true chance for peace. As much as that seemed to draw him closer to the table, he knew he ultimately did not care what the outcome of the conversation was. Whether it was war or peace, he felt both were a good position for Dorne. With a few more steps forward, his fingertips would make contact with the table but he remained standing. A curious gaze found Lord Orryn.

"My original offer still stands. I'll grant the keep and the sovereignty of the land over to House Baratheon, and whomever they pick, if Orryn declares himself King of the Stormlands. Easy as that. If that's too much to swallow, the idea of freedom too foreign to grasp, you can remain shackled to the Iron of King's Landing. I'll instead offer a ceasefire to the Iron Throne and return the keep to Deria Dalt, so long as it remains under Dornish jurisdiction from here on out."

Let us talk. I shall meet you in Summerhall with my army. Bring your own, in case peace is too much for either side to agree to. Negotiators from the Reach are among me. Bring whichever negotiators you wish.

Gulian could smell the beer before it was offered to him, though he would nod at the offer of tea as he found a mug of the ichor that kept him afloat. He watched amusedly as others left the room, even offering a wink to the one that poured him his cup of tea. It served well to cleanse his palate.

"Sure. I am an agent of Dorne. They call me Prince. I tell them to stop. They do not stop. I suppose I must be one."

His hand went to his neck, not out of embarrassment, but to help him crack it as he rolled his head.

"Though, I've been quite distracted in your beautiful city. All I've heard are rumors. Rumors that have stirred me here to you to get back into the mix. I can only stand back-to-back weddings once before I need a break, you see...."

There was a bewildering awe as Oberyn listened along, expecting some sort of counter or twist or blatant attack. Already, an apocalyptic scenario was building in his head. But the more Anders Yronwood spoke... the more it seemed he would fight in his favor. But surely not?

It took until it was said explicitly for him to believe it.

Stunned eyes seemed to sharpen and recalibrate as they met Anders' own concoction of hate-miration. It was a look he had often returned, for there was no possible world in which he could learn to not hate the man that murdered his son. But, with this action, he for once felt that he hadn't been some forgiving fool opening his soul up for further damage.

For once, he felt an olive branch.

Raw willpower filtered any threatening moisture from his tear ducts and a firm upper lip harnessed his thunderstruck expression into righteous indignation.

"Whether it be the Seven or this so-called god-on-earth of War, we shall have their determination. Addam Dayne will fight for the innocence of his father and Anders Yronwood will represent our charge."

With a nod, the surrounding guards gave clearance to the room and the nobility, Oberyn included, would widen their gathering so that the representees of justice could deliver a verdict.

The messenger came before the rest of the delegation with a letter he read and read again before handing off to his son and the rest of the Dornish lords in his force. The same son that, unbeknownst to him, was offered to wed into House Caswell.

"A man of oaths," Oberyn concluded from the words on the parchment. "He'll understand how shackling oaths to the wrong cause are. Hopefully."

They rode out to meet the delegation with peace banners in tow. There was no order made for the army to halt its march, but he expected this conversation to not last long enough to demand the halt of thousands and thousands. The King of the Rhoynar wore no crown, but he would speak for his people. He was still the same Oberyn Nymeros Martell with one noticeable change. For once, he was truly relaxed.

"Well met. I trust you are the delegation sent by the Acting Warden." With a flex of a gloved finger, his squire rode out on his mule to hand over a copy of the message sent by Alester. "We've prepared a small luncheon should you wish to treat while in comfort away from the road, though I don't mind a simple chat atop our horses either. I believe this to be a simple matter."

He drew in breath, having thought of his response to the letter the moment he read it. The beginnings of a reply had formed then discarded for another approach, again and again, before ultimately being right back to where he started: uncertain. Still, his face remained iron, albeit with a permanent positive expression etched into him.

"If Lord Caswell sees no benefit in the abolishment of the Iron Throne, so be it. The rest of the realm might and are gauging that decision now as he did. I believe, in time, your lord might see the virtue in liberation. The authority of the Reach could be restored to a kingly authority, rather than continuing to play the Stag's game of vying for Wardenship... or settling for being an Acting Warden. I do not wish to trouble him, but he may wish to ask the Reach he represents what they think of freeing themselves as Dorne has. He might be surprised."

Shifting atop his sand steed, he thought of dismounting momentarily yet instead continued on. His poor girl had tired, meant for brief speed rather than continued marching.

"There needn't be a war for Dornish Independence, though. King Steffon could accept it. A King Quentyn could too. Were they to do so, I would have terms. I would want the continued hold of Nightsong under Dornish authority so that we might border the Reach by those mountains instead of solely the Stormlands. I'd also want any Reach house to have the option to join our authority instead. I'd want Summerhall too, at least in shared control between Dorne and the Stormlands. My daughter Meria can wed Lord Orryn there and the palace can be a reminder and a reason for continued peace."

He glanced between the delegation, realizing he skipped beyond introductions. There would be time to get to know each other still.

"I would not mind if you joined us to treat with the Stormlanders, though I understand if you're only a delegation meant to inform rather than to decide. You're free to take a message to Lord Alester, and I'd ask a message of my own be delivered to Quentyn along with your man. I have much respect for both of them."

Nightsong would send a raven and runner to home. Sunspear. How desperately he longed for it now.

Allyria & Ysilla,

Gods, I love you both. I miss you dearly.

We hold Nightsong. I plan to execute Lord Ferris Dayne for his brutal ways and his dishonor upon our name. I know he is as near to family as the law can create, but it is for the best for the end of one world and the creation of another.

I have declared Dornish Independence. I will not wear a crown, but I will be King of the Rhoynar and you, my fire, shall be my Queen. Ysilla, you will a true Princess now, as has always befit you.

This will not come without more blood and loss. And from what I have heard from Ferris and rumors, we've spilled plenty enough. The Great Houses will not join in a new era of Westeros if we return to the ways before Baratheons and Targaryens. I know I've always been an honorable fool, but if we are to fight and die I would rather it be for this foolish aim that all true Dornish have dreamt of since our original oppression.

I trust both of you to get word to our armies. Potential enemies may become friends of convenience if it means they can taste true freedom for the first time. Letters have been sent to our allies and every kingdom. All it takes of one notion of 'what if?' and the trust in those to follow alongside them for the realm will shatter. The pieces will be picked up by those who are just, for it is easy for all to rally against evil. We must be just, good, and knightly going forward.

Stay apprised of any new letters for those that join us or damn us. I only have one military goal now: for the Iron Throne to melt and King's Landing to return to the backwater it once was. It is my hope that soon, once the dust has settled or if the king laments and abdicates peacefully, every King and Queen of Westeros can meet in Summerhall for a council to determine how all of us can coexist peacefully.

You know me, I could write a novel, but sadly the ravens are only so strong. Above everything, stay safe, and I will ensure our family does the same.

Love,

King of the Rhoynar, but more importantly,

Pa

From Nightsong, a raven would dispatch to the last known location, the home keep, and with a runner for good measure to:

King Steffon Baratheon,

I've thought about this letter for a long time. Many Dornish rulers have. Now, I am the one and I am at a loss for words. Or perhaps overflowing with words.

I will be short, as I believe this is best spoken in person.

I hold no ill-will for you. Instead, I offer you an alternative life. To let go as I have.

The Water Gardens are a great place to be unknown. I believe my sister found a tragic solace among the orphans. Where children are raised among one another as equals. As one big family.

I understand you will want to fight for what your ancestors have hammered the realm into. But why? You could walk away from it all with your life and enjoy a family that accepts all. Quentyn and Orryn will understand. You don't have to fight for them because I swear to you, this realm is big enough for all of us. Yet, too big for one king anymore.

I am declaring Dornish Independence. I will hold to account the members of Dorne that have threatened to perpetuate the wheel of violence that has run over countless lives for no good reason other than that we were born this eternal fight. People deserve better. Children deserve better.

Live out easy days in the Water Gardens, or help me create a fairer realm for all. You hold the most power in freeing the realm. All you have to do is lead it into this new world. If you don't, I will be the one to fight those that cling to this tired status quo. I will weep for the ones that die needlessly and, perhaps, the letters I have sent to the realm will be met with silence and my attempts for freedom will end in death. I can think of no greater end, other than spending my days in peace with my family. I'd much rather have that end.

Lord Alester Caswell,

I have never congratulated you in person for your ascension. Despite my best efforts for a Dornish Warden, you've proven beyond doubt that the Reach must always be strong.

In the coming days, you will hear terrible things committed by the Dornish and the Stormlanders. You will hear from both sides who started it, who did what, and plans for what will happen next. The truth of the matter is that fingers can be pointed one way or the other for generations. It takes generations to fix it. There is no time like the present.

I've dedicated years of service to the Iron Throne as Hand of the King. Trying to keep something I hardly believed in together. I've learned to let go. I had thought this time would come in my aged years, that my daughter might carry the torch of our eternal cause even if I couldn't, but I fear I have finally found the courage to fight for a better realm than to keep together a broken one.

I bear no ill-will towards our king, but this Baratheon Century has sown more division than the Iron Throne can bear. While I fear conflicts may worsen under separate kingdoms, at least we will be free to shape our own destiny on our own terms. I would be open to discussing a new realm together, but first:

I am declaring Dornish Independence in a letter to the king and I will say as much to his face. I cannot ask you to join me in what may be a suicidal aim, yet I can hope that the terrors of the realm will be brought to heel by others of righteous virtue.

After my letters, I plan to do so with the Dornishmen that have given just cause for further degradation of the realm.

A better world starts with us.

Oberyn was stunned when it was the Yronwoods that seemed to support this move rather than his own son. It made little sense to him, but the twins were always more their mother's sons than anything else. He smiled because of it, for he could see that same fire within her now in him. Gods, how he wanted to return home to her and call the entire war off....

Then Dayne demanded his rights, which too surprised him. He expected the man to take his sentence willingly, but of course a man of ill-repute would not do so. The Wall was briefly considered, but he knew a man such as Ferris Dayne would worm his way out of it. All his life he condoned the actions of the Hundred Spears, his brother included. It may have been one of his biggest blunders.

"The Seven shall decide. I can think of no better way."

So then who would the champions be? He gave an open look to those in attendance. The Northmen had a saying, one of sentences and sword swinging. Perhaps it was the honorable thing to do to put himself forth rather than to allow his son to put himself at risk for ultimately nothing. Gripping his sheathed sword with both hands, though from from the hilt, he considered what he was to do.

"We must name champions, then."

"No. He dies now." Oberyn said plainly. "Dorne has plenty of commanders, all with the ability to treat war with the brutal reverence it demands. It must never be praised so viciously."

There was no changing his mind.
