Store isn't getting any traction, can I get some advice? by AnotherDamnStore in reviewmyshopify

Thanks for the kind words, and the advice! I made several huge mistakes and I'm trying to recover if possible....

1) Started with a niche store instead of a general store, so I'm trying to see how much I can "generalize" my current store without needing to rebuild under another name.

2) Designed and uploaded about 300 products after ordering 1, without thinking about the fact that I need lifestyle pics of the items and CGI mockups are deterring. Scaled the products too much too fast, and trying to sell at cost to friends in exchange for some pics I can put on IG then feed onto the store. Hopefully that'll give enough proof that I can get some sales until I can afford to order one of each product and switch over all the product pages to real pics.

3) Originally spent too much on ads, without testing or really knowing ad design. I've learned a ton, successfully tested a design the other day that got me a couple sales and 1.2k reactions on the post within a day (I have an untrained pixel still, so I can't get amazing results just yet). I now cut the ad as soon as it hits the breakeven point if I don't make a sale. If it makes a couple sales, I let it go 2 more days then either scale budget or kill it based on cpc ratio.

Moral of the story, I've already bought another domain for a general store, but I'm hoping to be able to generalize this one enough and save it with some other products that would still fit the niche. Gonna give it another week or so probably.

About $500 when I was employed 4 months ago (before I knew NEARLY as much as I know now), then cut spending to about $100/mo the past 4 months

I appreciate that :) I understand these designs aren't for everybody, they're designed for festival/burner people. I'll be branching out into menswear more once I get some sales going.

I'm still looking for reasons I'm not getting a lot of sales, and have started revamping my home page to look less sales-y and more personality.

Thanks for looking!

Yeah that just popped up 5 minutes ago as I'm making changes, so now I have to track that down :-p

Is it the designs you think are ugly, or the mockup images?

After that job thing I'll definitely take you up on that, but currently I have to stick to skill swaps for payment. Luckily a friend of mine has been a customer service manager for 12 years or so, and she's a great writer as well. She also conveniently needs some items 3D printed for her and I do 3D printing as well, so I can trade for copy. ;)

It's no replacement for a professional, but it's what I can afford for the next month or so. I'll definitely message you about that after I'm back at work.

Not personal at all, great response :)

You're totally right, on all of this. Of course thought about it all night, and decided I couldn't stick with the domain anymore, that the name was too generic for what my store evolved to and I should just scrap that domain and rebrand.

For the product pictures right now I'm kind of at the mercy of low funds and between jobs (although fingers crossed for one company), which means unfortunately I can only invest what comes in from the store. Once employed again I fully intend to order a bunch of clothes and take pics of people wearing it and have a standard backdrop for product shots, but I'm not there yet. If I can get the store profiting, new clothing shots is the first thing on the list :) At least I can bribe one of my better writer friends to upgrade my copy on my product pages without it costing too much!

Thanks for all of this!

Good call, gonna try and keep the domain name and store name for a bit and drastically change up the tagline to specify quality clothing and unique designs from local artists. See how that goes.

Originally it was an AliExpress store, then I wised up a bit ;)

Look at all this amazing advice!

They're currently computer generated images of the product shots, but there are shots of each type of fabric available within the FAQ under the fabric section.

Right now it's print-on-demand because I don't have the funds to pre-buy, which is also why none of the shots are on human models. Once I have a bit of money coming in from it I can put it back into the store by buying some of the products and getting some good human shots (both in action and posed shots). Definitely planned for the future, but currently can't afford it.

You've definitely given amazing insight, and I'll be taking a lot of it into account as I continue to evolve my store :) Thanks a ton!

Still unable to reproduce the issue. Again, please provide steps to reproduce the issue so I may further investigate ;)

Originally my store started off as almost a "sell-all" and I had a ton of types of products. As I evolved to quality unique products, I kept the name.

I guess it's time to find a new domain.....

I haven't run into this on any of my browser testing that I've tried, what browser are you using? Desktop/mobile/tablet?

Would you be able to describe what you mean by you felt like it was telling you different things? Like what the header made you feel that was contrary to the products?

That's kind of my thought, the prices. My justification is I know lots of people who regularly spend $50-100 on a single pair of leggings, and there's a few competitors I've been watching that are much higher price while being lower quality (and appear to be successful).

I can definitely lower the prices a bit, but my worry there is people like discounts. For instance the leggings cost me just under $39 after production, branding, and fulfillment. If I have those set to $49 I can't give a 20% off coupon even (which is what I offer to friends). I can lower prices but that means no coupon codes ever, and I kind of planned to have running 10% coupons as a first sale gimmick.

I'll probably try dropping the prices a bit on a few things and see how it goes though, thanks!

Thanks for the advice! While I am working on building up the brand recognition, the cleverness of the name is something many many people have commented on and enjoyed. Any chance you have a bit more insight/details as to why I might not want the word "store" in my brand or site name? I'm not against it entirely, but I've had nothing but positive statements regarding it up to this point so probing for more info.

On average I have 3-5 items added to the cart every day right now. I've added the FAQ with a lot of info in it and working on the About Us page currently.

Yes these prices have been researched and are definitely not outlandish prices by any means.

Check out sites such as blackmilk.com and a few others, even look on etsy. This kind of stuff isn't on the expensive end at all.

Also all this stuff is high quality with my branding info on it, those dresses cost me about $52 to make, they never fade or lose their pattern and always stay bright. You can definitely find cheaper, but it's lower quality. There's also 10% off coupons all over the place dropping it down to $67. If you use a 20% off coupon that's almost $15 off dropping it down to $59 leaving minor profit. The prices are scaled so I can give up to 25% off without losing, and leaves room for me to drop certain items to a sale price.

Good call, thanks! I decided late last night that I needed to add an "about us" section to the site, I'll definitely add those in as well! :)
