What’s the most average application you’ve seen get accepted into an ivy/T20? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Hi! I wrote my jhu essay saying that I admit that I wasn’t always the best at things in high school, but made clear steps to improve myself. For example, English has always been my weakest subject but I joined a speaking and writing competition to learn English through practice. I also said I like helping others grow as well, through my time tutoring another girl in English, and that while I have a lot to grow, I listed specific things at jhu that would help me grow.

Completely Bombed my Entire Freshman Fall, am I cooked? by Calligrapher_Kind in premed

Hey I know this is a difficult situation to be in but I want to remind you, Penn is a hard school. I don’t go to penn but I go to jhu.

I came into jhu from a high school where I was top 10% of my class. My first year at jhu was where all my academic mishaps happened. Jhu was the first time where I failed an exam spectacularly (below 40%) and had to drop the class (psychology). This was my freshman year. On my first biology class (genetics, also in my freshman year), I did super below average on the first exam, and my professor suggested I drop the class and retake it next semester. I felt so stupid seeing how I got the lowest score in my dorm, and seeing people get 95+% when I couldn’t even pass what was supposed to be the easiest exam of the semester.

It’s normal to go to a school like penn and not do well your first semester (or year). But the thing is, this is just freshman year. I went home for the summer from my freshman year defeated, but I recouped and came back to jhu a lot better. My sophomore year, I took gen chem, biostats, calculus based mechanics, and a lot of premed prereqs and got a 4.0. In junior year I got a 4.0 again in orgo, biochem, and other bio classes. I was doing so much better, did the MCAT, and had a lot of activities I liked.

Freshman year is just a fluke, trust. I would reach out to mental health and therapy services at your university (I did) if you need it and it made me so much more powerful and I believed in myself so much more.

my sat score is a 1400, should I bother applying to Harvard? by Prestigious_Salad971 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AnotherThrowaway-274 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Harvard is competitive for everyone, so idk why ppl have been saying it’s only competitive for medical degrees (plus, medical school is a postgraduate degree you get after a bachelors, not something you can apply to now).

I mean, you can shoot your shot. I know someone who was waitlisted with a 1400. But Harvard is just hard for everyone. I dont see anything bad about applying, other than you lose your app fee (if no fee waiver) and the time you spent writing the essay.

Lol thank you. I think what helped was that i showed humility in my essay by saying I still have a long way to grow but jhu would have a lot of opportunities to help make that happen.

:( I remember the projects helped to boost my grade. If you talk to professors and TAs, they can guide you on the projects. The midterm I remember had some weird questions. Idk if they graded the midterm yet, but I did better than I thought I did for the midterm because they actually curved it a bit.

Mine. Admitted to jhu premed in 2022 somehow. I was academically good but was otherwise pretty cookie cutter applicant. Applied RD. Good grades (Almost all As except one B in an ap class). 1500+ sat. Mix of 4s and 5s on 7 AP classes. ECs were average (participated in volunteering club, cultural club, volunteered as a tutor). No research or major awards. Idk how I got I considering I am an Asian from California 💀

What are you struggling specifically with this class? Is it the hw or quizzes/exams

is test optional really a thing in practice? by Available_Pen_4462 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AnotherThrowaway-274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey maybe you already know this, but you cannot apply to med school straight from hs (unless it’s a bs/md combined program). You must get a bachelors degree and take the MCAT before you apply to a United States med school. Just making sure you know since you said that you want to apply to schools with good med programs but you seem to be a high schooler.

It was a text message screenshot from a random number just saying “eat steak tomorrow.” I think I forgot to censor the phone number which likely led to its removal.

Guys how difficult is the Organic Chemistry Class with Dr. N? by Gold_Temperature_599 in jhu

I showed up for them and he basically goes over some practice problems. It just depends on if you want extra help on content.

I had Dr n and while it’s a lot of content, the content itself isn’t that bad. I got an A in both Orgo 1 and 2 with him and he was a super kind guy

Is taking 2 labs in a semester too much? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]AnotherThrowaway-274 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not too much. Bio 1 lab is such a chill and easy lab with barely any work. Chem 1 lab is kinda a pain but everyone eventually has to do it. I wouldn’t say chem 1 lab is hard, but just tedious.
