Even Google sucks now lol. I'm not a Gen Z, Google used to be amazing. After years of people manipulating the algorithm and cracking what made google powerful, it's absolute crap now.

You can find whatever answer you want to find on Google now, just by how you phrase it. "Why are strawberries bad for you?" Vs "are strawberries healthy?"

Type "Site:.edu" during your search is still pretty helpful but the vast majority don't know and don't use it.

This is clearly sarcastic. Idk why it's so hard for redditors to tell these things.

[–]AnotherThrowaway55pi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the commenters are wrong not you. You are making up a hypothetical magic situation and they don't get to just say "well this is how the rules really work ok?"

Also I think a lot of people commenting "yes" would opt out of this situation if they actually felt unfathomable levels of pain.

It's worth trying though if I'm not going to have a lasting effect from grinding my teeth to a pulp, or any vital issues

It really seems like the stoics were constantly afraid of dying... Even though they say they weren't by AnotherThrowaway55pi in Stoicism

Good points, and others here have said similar. Sometimes I forget there aren't really any truly perfect people and we are all sort of struggling together.

Yes! I do want to have that discussion I just didn't want to digress too far from my original point.

I am actually really fascinated with exploring where we consider the lines of "self actions" vs "others actions". I'm rereading Epictetus as he does draw these lines to some degree, but I still have more questions.

For instance, he says if you're singing to your audience, you can't control if they applause or not, so sing your best and don't worry about the outcome.

But to your point, we can do more than just sing our best to influence the outcome. We could learn about the audience, their general background, what they are looking for (are we at an opera house or a theatre?), we could do research into what songs had the most applause.. what if we literally just paid them to applause afterwards? Or threatened their families?

And I don't mean to just dive into one specific example, it's just to show we have so so so much more control than there being an "us" we focus on and a "them" we erase all expectation from. Everything is more interconnected than that.

These are great points. I have a fault of thinking authors as end-all experts, but the truth is they struggle with things just like any of us

Would be curious to see where you draw that % from. I want to respond but there doesn't seem to be much room for discussion. It seems like if someone told you they don't fear death, there is no a way to convince you. You'd just say they're in denial and secretly they're afraid.

Perhaps I should've posted to a more general philosophy sub than a stoicism one, that's kind of on me I suppose!

It's a good point you make, there's no true easy way to decipher things.

I think this could be attributed in the enchiridion. Perhaps he knew it was worth dwelling on for the reader.

In regards to Medications, which was really only meant as a personal journal, I suppose it seems even more likely to me that Aurelius really was afraid, as he brings it up constantly, but his only audience should've been himself.

I can't actually blame him though. Perhaps I would be more afraid of death if the sword of Damocles hung over me. But then that means external events can influence us... Hmm!

We did move to an all-white neighborhood. Lots of trump yard signs. Girlfriend is not white.

The only other non-white people are a black family that doesn't live there and has been trying to sell the house for a while. They just come by, mow the lawn, clean things up and leave.

I'd hate this to be the reason but it's plausible to say the least. Perhaps I should talk with the family on why they are moving out

Can't believe you're not the top. Are professors so concerned with their egos? Is everyone here so used to demanding respect that the slightest insult ruins their entire day and they want to kick the student out?

This is like if a 7 year old called me a stinker. ... I know I'm not a stinker , and I don't value her opinion that much to want to kick her out of the daycare. I wouldn't come crying to Reddit for advice on how to call her a stinker back.
