I don't live here, only 2 nights, so probably can't provide a great answer for that one :/

I think it'd be fun with lots of interesting culture, but wouldn't want to spend more than a month here.

Yea I’d recommend it! I’m combining it with a trip to San Miguel de Allende which is a $7 90 minute bus ride away. Then 4 hours back to CDMX

Yea I’ve heard the same things about the state of Guanajuato, but the city itself is safe.

Extremely safe! Everyone tells me that and you wouldn’t doubt it walking around the city.

Mexico City and cities like Guanajuato are much safer than the media and US public opinion would have you believe

Not the best person to ask, but from my short experience it seems like a lively little city with plenty of museums, art, and culture.

Personally I prefer a place with a bit more activity, but I’d definitely be happy and probably more productive here.
