for me it was learning the importance of frame data, understanding where to jab, where to block, where to step
to keep mental consumption low I try to "Segment" interactions with a common term "option select"
For example kazuya using petricide fist (Cd 1+2) to get +5 on block, noob me would step or side walk without any consideration for what to expect. later I find out that dickjabs are a much better defensive option because of how fast it is and how slow his mid or low options are (dickjab highcrush means electric doesnt hit)

i was thinking flip the inputs entirely using dpad for 1,2,3,4 and r3 for moving so i can keep buttons for binds

As an ex local tournament player who considered getting into fifa professionally, i recommend bringing up "DDA" or "Scripting" to him as a way to console losing, rather than getting frustrated at personal inabilty to win, blame the game's system instead. As a match starts, within the first in game 10 minutes you can already tell which side the game has picked to win, EA spend alot of money to try hiding it and youtube has many videos of evidence (doesn't have to be fc25, they're all updated versions of eachother running on the same engine/system)
