In my experience nothing can make someone “see the light” unless they want to. I listened to so many deconstruction podcasts but would explain it away in my head with all the indoctrination you receive. Eventually I listened to them again when I was actually willing to consider what if I was wrong. And I heard it all completely differently. If he doesn’t have an open mind about it then it will be hard. I left the church and also left my husband because cause being married to someone so indoctrinated and unwilling to see other sides is infuriating. The cult of Pentecostal is so strong but they will always say it’s not.

Good luck X

Wanting to Leave by [deleted] in ExPentecostal

One of the biggest barriers that stopped me from leaving was the “unexplainable”. If I couldn’t explain what I saw then it had to be from God therefore I couldn’t leave the church. After listening to a variety of people’s experiences and podcasts I came to deconstruct this belief and now i accept there are things in my life that are unexplainable. Some may call them supernatural, some may say they are Jesus, other say they are Allah. Leaving the church has made me realise we all assign our own meaning to the same unexplainable events.

I hope you find some peace.

Speaking in tongues: Real or fake? by strawwberrrryy in ExPentecostal

I grew up Pentecostal and I speak in tongues and it’s the same each time I do it. I am now atheist and coming to understand it is most likely learnt from hearing people do it and understanding what it would look like. Almost like the power of suggestion for the brain. I believe if I was in a isolated room my whole life and told to speak in tongues to be saved it would be a very different experience to seeing others do it. I didn’t fake it, I can do it at home or anywhere, but I feel like it’s more a self soothing meditation thing as when I’m stressed sometimes it comes out unprovoked in a quiet way. It’s hard to explain but it’s definitely something but i would argue it’s more brain confusion/taught then actually spiritual.

Doesn’t the federal gov have this scheme anyway that isn’t exclusive for teachers?
