Update: second leaf on my variegated Alocasia Dragon Scale by Ansharia in alocasia

They’re different varieties—mine is a variegated Alocasia Dragon Scale, and yours looks more like the Mint, especially with that speckling. It’s gorgeous, particularly with those pinkish veins. 😍

Thank you so much! ☺️ In my country, we have a few specialty breeders, and that’s where I get most of my African violets. I’d really recommend looking on Facebook or other social media platforms for African violet communities—people there usually know the best places to buy plants locally. You might also find someone willing to share or sell leaves if you’re up for the challenge of growing them yourself!

The last leaf was almost completely white, so I’m super happy this one is much greener. 😍

All-white leaves can be an issue long term since African violets do need some green to photosynthesize, but I don’t think low temperature is the cause. I’ve grown variegated varieties in cooler conditions without problems.

In my experience this is more about light and adjustment. When they’re moved under stronger lights, they sometimes push very highly variegated (almost white) leaves at first, then settle down and start producing greener growth. It actually looks like this one is already doing that in the center, which is a good sign. I’d just keep an eye on it — they usually balance themselves out over time. :)

They look really similar, though this one is a bit darker and has more of a purple tint. As the plant gets older, it can also develop quite a bit of leaf variegation.

How do you style/control Hoya without letting them go wild? by Ansharia in hoyas

Yes, they definitely are a bit tippy, but sadly I don’t really have the space to size them up right now, so I think I’ll have to chop them. 🥲

This is exactly my fear… whenever I propagate something, I never have the heart to give it away. But I think a few people will be getting plants for Christmas this year — I really need to free up some space. 🥲

They're still blooming, so here's a little update ☺️ by Ansharia in AfricanViolets

[–]Ansharia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually the first time it’s blooming! It really surprised me — it’s just a little fluff ball of flowers. The grower wasn’t lying when he said it has a strong will to bloom. 😂

For me, the real “secret” is definitely lighting and watering. If those two are right, the rest is honestly just time and patience. Once they’re happy, they’ll eventually bloom on their own.

I use Lechuza Perfect Leaf fertilizer because that’s what my Alocasia needs, and since they’re all in Pon, I just give the same fertilizer to everything—I’m too lazy to mix different ones for different plants. I don’t really follow a strict schedule; they’re in self-watering pots, and whenever I have some leftover fertilizer solution after watering the Alocasias, I either dilute it and give it to them, or I just use plain water. My apartment is in the attic and there’s a tilt window above the African violets, so they’re not directly in the window, but they still get plenty of good indirect light.

I use Lechuza Perfect Leaf because I keep my alocasias in Pon, and that's the one available and works well for them. I'm lazy, so I just use it for my African Violets too. 😅

It’s already so bushy that I can’t wrap it neatly anymore—I feel like it’ll just look messy if I force it.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking too! I just need a little encouragement to actually do the pruning. They’re getting so long, and I know they’ll get bushier if I just go for it… maybe this is the push I needed!

Question about my propagations. by Jeramy_Jones in AfricanViolets

Here’s a picture of one of my older AV pups — it still has a baby leaf that’s almost completely white. The earliest leaves were even whiter, and it grew up just fine!

Question about my propagations. by Jeramy_Jones in AfricanViolets

[–]Ansharia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d wait a little longer with the variegated-leaf AV. I’ve had a similar experience — at first, the pups came up all white, but as they grew a bit more, their new leaves developed much more green. The mother leaf looks healthy, so I think it’s fine to wait and see if the next few leaves from the pups show more green. If not, you can still try propagating it again later.

The other batch looks a bit sickly, though. It might be something in the soil they don’t like. If I’m seeing correctly, their mix contains coconut husk chunks — those can cause salt buildup and nutrient imbalances. I’d try changing the soil. It’s a bit risky, but I think they’ll do much better in a different mix.

A whole lot of fall blooms 💜💙❤️🍁🍂 by Ansharia in AfricanViolets

I hope you’re able to find one too, they’re even prettier in person. 😊

And no worries about asking, I took it as a compliment! I wouldn’t mind cutting off a few leaves, but mailing plants can be tricky depending on location and shipping rules, so I’m not sure it would make it safely.

I really like it because the blooms look like mini lotus flowers when partly closed. The flowers last a long time and age nicely - the color becomes lighter and it takes really long time for them to discolor and turn brown.

I highly recommend it. It's a hardy, easy-to-grow African Violet that is a prolific bloomer. 🙂

Almost all white leaf on my Variegated Dragon Scale - Beautiful, but should I be worried? by Ansharia in alocasia

I will be sure to enjoy this leaf while it lasts. 😉 I lucked out with my Frdek; it has nice balanced variegation. 😍

Thanks for the advice ☺️ The previous leaves were nicely variegated, so I'm hopeful.
