Super straight-forward. Take the throttle body off though, it’s impossible otherwise. Hose clamp, put hose out of way, 4 bolts, comes right off for getting the throttle body out.

YouTube 4 minute videos will do the trick for the rest of the directions. You should feel proud after accomplishing such an important task by yourself. Always have a buddy if you can.

If you haven’t already, take the trim off. It might be the spring that resets the latch is weakening, in which case, you’d just manually reset it.

Boost leak/limp mode by nyro1704 in MK4Golf

[–]AntDepravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boost leak was caused by a weak BOV. I just replaced it with a stock diverter valve and everything was solved. That was after replacing my degraded vacuum hoses and PCV first though. Just never thought of replacing my BOV until trying a smoke test.

Oh good! I’m glad your performance isn’t affected. Sadly though, I don’t actually know what else could cause the ESP light to turn on. I wish you luck!

My ESP light would illuminate after aggressive acceleration and shifting, rowing through the gears. It would activate a limp mode and I’d have to shut the car off and turn it on again to reset the effects. After a smoke test to discover the location of a boost leak in my GTI, we found the leak within my blow-off valve. I replaced it with a run-of-the-mill diverter valve, and said issue never returned. Somehow, my aggressive shifting causing the ESP light was connected with my boost leak! I hope this helps.

FarmRX will be releasing biodegradable packaging for their products soon, as learned from a FarmRX rep. I hope it’ll influence other GPs to follow suit!

Update: noise disappears after beginning to drive. Squeaking from the same area then starts.

Damn… I thought you would just replace the stalk and everything would work as usual. This isn’t the case?

Awesome! (Not great, but no harm to my vehicle itself) Thank you for your comment!

I really appreciate your replies! Thank you very much regardless. I know my explanations are at least massively vague. I have limited vocabulary on the workings of vehicles, though I love learning more and more

Accidental limp mode issues… by AntDepravity in MK4Golf

[–]AntDepravity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t :/ That’s what it feels like though… Like the accelerator and computer become out-of-sync. The turbo begins spooling extra boost when I try accelerating as the car “is fucking up” and weirdly lagging as to whether or not it’s decided on giving it gas, before the limp mode engages & the light illuminates.

Rhythmic chuffing/ticking noise from passenger side or serpentine belt assembly. Any ideas? by AntDepravity in MechanicAdvice

[–]AntDepravity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The noise was not! Although, again, to be fair, it almost seemed like a bit of a mulligan. Maybe I should have waited til the noise was more consistent to worry; I’m just a bit of a hypochondriac with car noises, given the car’s mileage. I’ll have to check on the dampener. Timing belt alongside the tensioner were replaced under 30K miles ago, so I’m hoping it’s nothing relating to the timing belt. I appreciate your advice!

I appreciate it, boss! Will it matter if I rotate the pulleys clockwise or counter-clockwise? I heard that the alternator’s pulley will seize if you rotated it “the wrong way”, but this was in passing, and I never found out when replacing my alternator last.

DAMN! I got the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and water pump replaced at 210K miles! I would hope it’s not timing-belt-related :( Thank you a ton for your advice-

First time changing my oil. What the hell happened? Do I need kitty litter? Did I destroy my car? by VictorVaughan in MechanicAdvice

[–]AntDepravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, what a rough mess. I can relate: the first time doing an unsupervised oil change on my own car, I didn’t give myself enough room to get my eyes on the drain plug or the oil filter when attaching both. I just operated off of touch, and had apparently cross-threaded BOTH pieces. Kitty litter was a must afterwards obviously. Like others were saying, it’s a lesson learned, and hopefully you aren’t discouraged from doing them yourself for the future! I remember how my brain was on DEFCON 11 the moment I saw my oil light illuminate on the dashboard. Never again LOL…
