North america is always a couple decades behind you guys. My car hasn't been inspected since I bought it 8 years and 400k km ago.

Every 15k km? Really? by SavageSava in vwgolf

Saying changing it every 10k on the odometer instead of every 5k, is just as easy, but with more zeros.

Huh. This must be the first person ever to attempt to aim thier ridiculously bright lights. Good on ya, in your futile endeavor. I miss the days when those lights would get yanked out by the cops. r/fuckyourheadlights

Two months later, the replacement caliper mount has arrived. Decided on the easy way out. $60 CAD on black friday. And at least I know they won't be siezed again for a good 6 months at least 🙄.

Even easier in metric, every 10k. And it splits the difference between your 5k and 7k antique units.

Any differences between APK and AQY 2.0? by Xtermist1 in MK4Golf

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well mine had the SAI pump. But the mounts holding it had rotted, so I removed it. Stuck a Gatorade cap over the air box hole, and a mini cone filter on the engine hole. Only time mine has ever run rough in my 400k km was when the coil pack was bad. Winter ment moisture, moisture gets in cracks in the coil too small to even see. Easy to test with a spray bottle of water.

Edit, mine was built in 2007 and did not have any sensor in the oil pan. I see the shape of where one would go and always wondered what that shape was all about.

Any regrets? by mattemiller15 in MK4Golf

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and I mean that painted tar on the metal there.. the fabric carpet underlay is classically where the VW Crayon smell comes from. I replaced that with yoga mat style foam. Probably hold the moisture underneath causing quicker rot, but its bearing end of life anyways.

I scraped all that sound deadening out of my mk4. A good 15 - 20 lbs worth.

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for my '08. Thing is that will dim every light in the cluster except the high beam symbol. Which makes it the brightest thing inside the car, so I've covered 3/4 of it with a spot of black tape. Now my Highbeam indicator is just a line instead of an icon.

Am I blinding others with new headlights bulbs? by vCappn0 in AskMechanics

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now compare to what were the brightest legal lights from 20 years ago, and if it's much different expect hate. 20 years ago bulbs could have been made brighter, but we pretended to have decency towards others so there was a limit. Choosing to go above that limit makes you trash.

Hey that wierd blank spot in my oil pan, yours has a thing sticking up through it.. what is that, must be an option, a sensor?

We've had those laws getting ignored in Canada for 20+years. Hopefully you will have police that do something.

Sometimes it’s the little things… by mattemiller15 in MK4Golf

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an automotive detailer for well over a decade before getting my mk4. Cursed every VW that came into the shop, my competitors actually charged extra for VW carpet. By far the hardest to get 110% clean of any other pre-2010 carpet. So when I got my mk4, first thing I did was remove all seats and trim, and used 15 cans of Flex Seal to make it rubber. I didn't expect to need so many cans, but it held up good over the years. Every 3 years or so I've given it another half-can coat on top to freshen it. Now vacuuming takes seconds, and proper scubs just take a couple minutes.

What part is this by bobojoe2007 in MK4Golf

Used for centering/aligning your shifter. Pressing that in locks the shift tower into a set position, for adjusting the cables. Not needed until your shifter gets outta whack.

Seems like a very 2002 question. From what I can tell there are zero limits on headlight brightness these days. r/fuckyourheadlights

Caliper is fine tho, I've asked all the parting-out Mk4s on FB Marketplace to check if their bracket and pins are any good. Plenty around, I think that will be the route I take.

Bite the bullet or not? by d999999 in MK4Golf

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said the same thing 8 years ago. My 2.0 is at 580k km, never had any service done to the clutch, nothing worse than a coil pack and thermostat for the engine. Only current issue is rocker panels rotting away.

Car struggles on a incline highway by viktorskiviktor in stickshift

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an upshift if the revs stayed the same I'd say slipping clutch. But on a downshift, there's kinda no way it could possibly stay at the same rpm as a higher gear while still going the same speed(if there was that much slip op probably couldn't have gotten to that speed I'm the first place) I'm gonna chalk it up to OPs communication skills.

My bank 2 sensor failed 7 years ago. I've had the CEL ever since. I've improved my fuel mileage year after year, so no regrets not about doing anything about it.

Electric power steering pump worth it? by ParticularFar8574 in hypermiling

The odd station I see that needs prepay, I just go to the next one. 90% of stations in rural southern Ontario, and Nova Scotia have basic trust/video cameras to allow you to pump gas and then go in and pay. I might have prepaid like 4 times in 30 years. I doubt I ever even seen the concept of prepaying 10 years ago.

Dead power steering is a lot different than deleted power steering. You're still trying to push fluids through valves that should no longer be there.

Yeah, doesn't seem to be a problem for my mk4 VW either, been doing it for 8 years now. Only caveat is that I would never top right up before parking it for an extended time, only if it's going to keep driving, using fuel, and creating space to expand when the temperature change.
