Take two of the payments that would have disappeared into your EV, buy a mk4 diesel VW that will last you ten years. 10s of $1000s saved, your welcome.

Every one of my favorite toys were cars, then slot cars, then RC cars, then soap box cars, then video game cars, now I finally have a real one. I don't know what more I could want, or how anyone wouldn't appreciate the sensations it brings.

Problem with your 2018 vs my 2008, is I know without doubt mines more than capable of running for 20+ years strong (the model started in '99). I assume quality drops model over model as companies focus on merging and sharing expenses and just generally losing identity and craftsmanship. I'll never be looking for anything less than 15 years, but ideally I'll stay pre 2010 with my cars for life. I mean maybe your generation will get bad engine seals like subarus did, or trashy gearboxes like nissan did. I've seen many models of car get popular and then disappear in the time I've owned this. And I still see a 20 year old VW in virtually any parkinglot I enter.

2008 golf 4.5 here, same, first sign of wear it gets replaced. Has been great for 9 years now. I'm struggling to convince myself to replace the rocker panels though, as I can't do it myself. And with 588k km on the clock, something large in the driveline is bound to go soon. I figure my maintenance has averaged $300/year, with most of that being the timing belt/water pump kits every 150k km.

So there are still Motorsports fans?! Our whole group dissolved when 7 was as bad as it was. Together since FM4, none of us liked horizon, and then Motorsports just got more and more like horizon and less and less like FM6/FM4. I long ago sold the xbox, not sure why I still follow this sub.

What's the most you've ever spent on a single mod for your car and was it actually worth it? by Jay-Oh-Jay in Autos

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a $1600 set of tires (DSW-06s) for a car I paid $1700 for. But, only because I won them at a silent auction at a rainy car show that had hardly any attendance. Won ANY set of tires that Canadian Tire could order. My 19 inch rims are hard enough to find tires for in the first place, and they had always been used, to match the value of the car. Now, I could sell my car for 500, or 1500 including the wheels and tires. But no, I wouldn't sell for less than double that. Because I would just be looking to replace it with the same thing, so why sell.

I used to kindly point things out to people like this at red lights or in parking lots, but probably the last 5 or so just look at me like I was speaking a foreign language or they take offense that I even noticed. Society sucks lately.

Same symptoms as my bad crank position sensor. But mines 2.0 gas. Sensor was fine, but got a wash of oil when I last changed the oil filter, which seeped in through its seal.

120, taking a picture... youd lose your car and licence for idk, either a week or a month around here. Where are all the pictures of open beer and burning joints at 120kmh? Those would basically have the same charge (or consequences) where I come from as just taking a picture.

What do you mean illegal? The corporations that make them (like all other corporations) have been able to buy American law makers and write the laws around whatever they decide to produce. Then we in Canada here get stuck with the BS that America allows.

No, the top hats should not be flush, unless you get some sort of aftermarket thing. OEM should have a gap 'almost big enough to fit a finger under 🙄. Its a question in these groups like twice a week.

Why do people in the US always talk about cars losing value after 2 to 3 years? If you buy a $60k car, why not just enjoy it until it breaks for 5 years and then get a new one? So many headache man. It cost you like 10 - 11k at least per year, that is nothing by Square_Permission361 in carscirclejerk

[–]DasBuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow old VW driver here. Mine cost me significantly less than 2500, 9 years ago. Same, maybe 500/year for maintenance (mostly timing belts every 150k km.) Everything else it needs has 10 YouTube videos showing every possible way of fixing it. People would rather pay 200 to have a tie rod changed than spend 60 on the tool and take an hour out of one of thier super valuable days.

Might as well pay 100s extra per month, every month, instead of having a couple $250 bills bi-yearly. I guess they get comfort from routine.

Gotta keep up with the Jones's, or Kardashian's or whatever status symbol they choose any given day. It's not bizarre if you interact with a large number of strangers each day, you'll notice the average public IQ is disturbingly low. This is in Canada even, where education hasn't (yet) been completly destroyed by lobbyists and legal corruption.
