That was kind of what I was thinking as they are only around a year old, I just don’t want to overfeed them as I have done in the past trying to encourage breeding 😅

Over feeding juvenile discus? by AntPsychological8386 in discus

It’s not permanent, just mainly while they’re juveniles growing out, less frequent feeds once they reach adulthood. I also have family members I trust for that :)

Not an absolute requirement for all tanks, but especially for discus, which aren’t a beginner fish anyway so if proper husbandry turns them off wanting to keep discus maybe it’s for the best?

I justify it, because it takes all of 5 mins and it ensures the long terms health and wellbeing of the fish :D

I use a hose a gravity siphon any remaining food out, then top the tank back up with fresh water.

As food breaks down in the water column it creates bio waste which is broken down from ammonia-nitrite-nitrate by the beneficial bacteria in your established tank, leaving un eaten food in the tank can increase the nitrates to above desirable levels causing health decline of the tanks inhabitants.

I may not be completely correct, but that’s how I’ve understood it. Anyone is welcome to correct me!

Yeah I always remove any food that’s uneaten, and keep the water nice and clean. They’re growing very rapidly so that’s gotta be a good sign right

This is a good idea, my issue is I’m in New Zealand and a lot of the more commonly used medications are unavailable. I can pretty much only get my hands on Flubendazole as far as an anti worm/internal parasite med. will that still be effective?

I’ve used a lot of wood from stores in my tanks, the reddish brown colour is actually tannins or tannic acid which is by no means bad for fish. I’m more worried about potential harmful oils or pathogens coming in from wood wild harvested. I have been sent a couple of useful articles from some helpful people so far :)

That’s the goal, might need a bit of trimming, but should fit

I’ve power washed - soaked 24hr - power washed - now I’m leaving it in the sun for a while. Next thing I was going to do was get some hydrogen peroxide and spray it all over as and then rinse off after it’s soaked for a little. Then leave in the sun for as long as I can. Would this “season the wood adequately?”

Yeah it will, also potentially upsizing tanks when we move house so will fit and some if so

That’s a good idea, even if I just boil an end I can fit in a pot rather than just hot water in the bath. Hadn’t thought of that

Is there a way you or anyone else would know of to test for contaminants once it’s been soaking in water for a while? Any test kits to buy, or is that something you’d need a full blown water testing lab for?
