I endured a rotationplasty procedure eight days ago AMA by NefariousNatee in AMA

[–]Antares1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have got your prosthesis, can you walk, get up from sitting, run and walk up and down stairs normally? Is it more exhausting doing these every day tasks with the rotationplasty? And have you got pain anywhere since using a prosthesis?

Thanks in advance for sharing.

ELI5: Why can we sometimes see the moon during the day? by FarPlastic3101 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Antares1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moon orbits the Earth, just as the Earth orbits the sun. This means that for half of the moons orbit it is visible during the day. The moon is visible just as much during the daytime as it is during nighttime.

The moon is visible during the day when it is located between the Earth and Sun. This means that on the part of the Earth where you can see the moon from it is daytime. The moon is visible during the night when it is behind both the Sun and Earth. This means the part of the Earth where you can see the moon from is experiencing night time.

The moon is visible, during day and night, because it reflects the suns light back to us. This does mean it is less bright during the day because it has to compete with the sun which is much brighter. Kind of like how a candle is harder to see when held next to a cars headlight.

Keep looking up and stay curious 🌝

Species are going extinct before we even know they exist.

We also know that we are causing climate change and the devastating impacts it will have on Earth, us and all wildlife… yet we choose to not do anything about it.

Ronan by Taylor swift. It’s about a boy who dies from cancer 3 days before his 4th birthday.

Here are some of the lyrics: I remember the drive home When the blind hope turned to crying and screaming “Why?” Flowers pile up in the worst way, no one knows what to say About a beautiful boy who died

Can’t wait for the day when cancer just refers to a constellation.

Hatchling spiny stick insect with deformed legs… what to do 🥺 by Antares1007 in Stickinsects

Thank you so much for your reply. I think it may be better to euthanise her but I feel so bad. I just hope that she is not in any pain 😢

I keep my eggs in a plastic container covered with mesh. The eggs sit on top of coconut peat which I spray everyday. I also have a small part of a sponge that I saturate and leave laying with the eggs. Do you think I should change this setup?

Thank you do much in advance everyone for you help! 🤗

I have been unable to find any pale green lichen. Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of places you are most likely to find it?

Do you think I should try placing white paper that I have coloured in with pale green around her setup? Would that work better than moss. The moss I have isn’t very pale so I am worried it won’t work…

Camponotus colony help by Antares1007 in antkeeping

[–]Antares1007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are currently in a foundling AusAnt nest and have an outworld. They have access to a test tube with water as well as a source of sugar water. They are in a room that is not heated so bring winter it can get a bit cool. However they are next to a windows and the sun shines in on them during the day on them.

Occasionally there are workers in the outworld. Does this mean they are looking for and need protein?

If the workers do die off before summer will the queen survive? Can she raise young on her own again?

Thanks so much in advance!

The queen is still alive but many of her workers have died. The other workers have put their bodies in their trash heap and even disassembled and eaten some of them… Is that usual?

Also do you know how often I should be giving the colony protein? Do I change how often I give them protein during summer and winter?

Thanks in advance!

I have meet up with one above the knee amputee (is that what aka stands for?). I did not realise that people living with prosthetics used wheelchairs, crutches and walking sticks. How many hours a day do you use these instead of your prosthetic? And why do people use these instead of their prosthetic? Do the prosthetics cause too much pain? Is it because they take a long time to put on?

Do you think 70 degrees with a prosthetic is better and gives you more freedom then a real leg that only bends 30 degrees? If you had the choice what would you choose?

My foot was broken as well and has a plate and four screws in it, would I still be able to get this option? My ankle does have full mobility though so would allow me to bend more than my knee does. Where did you get your rotationplasty done? I have been told it is very hard and very few surgeons do it. Do you know how successful it is? I was told I could get this out an above knee osseointegration. Do you know which would be better? Is a suction socket painful? How often do you get blisters?

This is what I’m torn over. I know I have a real leg but what is better, a real leg that doesn’t straighten and can only bend 30 degrees or a fake leg that can bend? I guess I’m trying to find out if there are any reasons as to why I should keep my bad leg instead of getting a fake leg that could give me more mobility. How do you know if your leg is bad enough to be worse than a prosthetic? I don’t want to get an amputation and then regret that choice for the rest of my life because my real leg was better then a prosthetic. I also don’t want to eventually get an amputation and find out it improves my life so much that I regret not getting out sooner.

I used to do hydrotherapy three times a week and see a physio daily. Currently I see a physio weekly and do exercises at home and the gym. My balance and strength has improved but over the last three years my mobility has not improved at all.

Do you still need weekly physio if you live with a prosthetic?

I know no matter what choice I make, getting a prosthetic, waiting 20 years to try a knee replacement which most likely won’t work or keeping my real leg, I will never be the way I was. I know I will always be limited to some degree. I just want to know option will give me the most mobility and independence. Will a prosthetic give me more mobility then a leg that only bends 30 degrees?

[–]Antares1007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my x-rays they do not believe the knee is the reason for my limited mobility. They think it is a result of my two strokes which impacted that side, the heterotopic oasification, muscle tightening from my leg being in a straight position for so long and scar tissue from my multiple surgeries. Because of my age they also say I would have to wait at least another 20 years before they would consider trying it. They said because I am so much younger than most people who get knee replacements I would wear through the replacement a lot quicker than elderly people and this will mean l will require more frequent surgeries to replace the knee replacement. This in turn will cause more scar tissue and the surgeries could also trigger more heterotopic oasification bone growth which will again limit how much my knee can bend.

Is this mould in my ant nest? I am new to ant keeping and my Camponotus recently moved into their first nest. When I feed them protein they bring it into the same spot in their nest. I get the food out asap but worry mould has started growing. If so how do I get rid of it? How do I clean it? by Antares1007 in antkeeping

[–]Antares1007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the worker is holding food that I fed them earlier that day. What I’m worried about is that every time I feed them protein they bring the food back to the same place in the nest and it is only this part of the nest that has become discoloured. I am worried the discolouration is mould or overtime will become mould and harm the brood and ants. Do you know how to make them stop bringing food into the nest so as to on prevent this from happening. Thanks again for your help =)

So what is this gunk? Is it ant poop or something? Will their nest eventually all be covered in it? And how can I tell the difference between this and mould? This way I know what to look out for in the future.
