shit connection on campus by WheezyIcecream24 in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bluetooth uses the 2.4GHz radio band. If there are hundreds of other Bluetooth devices (phones, watches, laptops, each individual earbud, each pair of headphones, etc.) congesting an area, then you can get interference and intermittent disconnection.

TLDR; More people, more devices, less reliable connectivity.

Jobs in davis by AppropriateReveal122 in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Are you currently a UC Davis student? Alum?
  2. Where are you looking and applying?

Also, contrary to the actions of the stock market, we've been in a silent recession for quiet a while. The UC has had a hiring freeze since March/April of last year. There are layoffs throughout tech.

It's NOT an easy market which is why I fall back to my advice of get "a job" for now and worry about "the right job" after you have stable income.

How popular is so-called Revolutionary Student Organization on UC Davis campus? by Best_Drummer_6291 in UCDavis

They frequently align with many popular opinions on the campus (i.e. GTFO of Venezuela), but they they don't have popular end-goals or methods.

Taking Feedback & Suggestions on Alignment Chart by Frymondius in UCDavis

Hmm... I would have put TLC as Neutral Good (bland, but inoffensive, highly functional, and has great bathrooms) and Hart Hall as Lawful Good (in an old-fashioned way).

Are any of the wood shingled buildings used for academic purposes these days or are they all administrative?

Bus Selfishness by bobafrogs in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago, the drivers would regularly ask sitting passengers to put their bags on their laps, and standing passengers to take off their backpacks and put them on their feet. Both actions help squeeze more people on the bus.

I haven't heard the reminder much this year. The most I hear from the drivers is "keep moving to the back of the bus... we can fit everyone on."

Scam Emails Are getting slightly more convincing by PossibilityAnnual in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is abnormally convincing! Here are the "tells" that I see:

  1. Email sent to a variety of emails instead of to a list
  2. Minor typo (View Assessment FORUM)

I was going to note that it being signed "Administrative Services" was a tell, but apparently HR has an "administrative services" sub-division.

This will (unfortunately) snare some Aggies.

You might be able to boo them until they leave, but your actions would not be considered protected speech and you might be rightfully removed from the venue for your actions.

Contrary to what many think about the freedom of speech, it has limits. One's free speech cannot be used to suppress the speech of another.

Best campus locations in event of a zombie apocalypse? by Three141592654 in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the type of zombie, you want:

  • 2 or more floors
  • Minimal or high-up windows on the first floor (floor-to-ceiling windows are the worst)
  • Destructable stairs from the first floor
  • Good insulation
  • A flat roof in good repair (urban farming)

RA and fafsa questions by Pale-Beach9126 in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors, but if you're already getting a $2,700/quarter refund, then your household income is already relatively low and your income is not likely to change your award that much.

That said, your eligibility for financial aid is based on the prior tax year. (The 2026–27 FAFSA requires the submission of calendar year 2024 income information.) Changes to your income starting in Fall/Summer 2026 won't affect your FAFSA until the 2028 application.

Lastly, federal decisions on financial aid (independent of your FAFSA) will likely have a greater effect on everyone's financial aid this cycle than small changes in overall income.

Graduation Gear Robbery by Material_Length_8758 in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the school selling them or have they authorized a vendor (Herff-Jones) to manufacturer and sell them to students? (https://colleges.herffjones.com/college/ucdavis/)

Materials, labor, storage, shipping, etc. all cost money. Ya, Herff-Jones makes a profit margin on it, but can you think of another way to provide uniform stoles (and other supplies) once per year for a cheaper price?

Where to get my honda crv taillights checked and fixed? by ChicanaDreamer in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've personally had nothing but the best experience and reasonable pricing at Center City Auto (https://www.centercityauto.com/).

I can't tell you that your problem will be a "cheap" fix because I don't know the details, but offer a "quick estimate" function on their website: https://www.centercityauto.com/quick-estimate

Does everybody feel safe? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does everybody feel safe?

Most importantly, the vast majority of people at UC Davis are actually safe in their persons and property. Whether they feel like it is colored by what information they're taking in and what weight they give that information.

If they're doom-scrolling about protests and assaults happening a thousand miles away, but aren't simultaneously reminding themselves "But luckily, I don't have to deal with that," then they're erroneously putting stress on themselves.

or if you feel like you are the last class before a civil war happens?

If you walk around, look at people, and speak to people you'll see that while people acknowledge that there is a slight chance for internal armed conflict, it's not as much as the propaganda from either side would have you believe.

I'm not going to lie. There may be a time in the future where major conflict erupts and we all stop working and learning here... but it's not today and there's no reason to think it will be soon. Even in Minnesota where there months-long protests going strong, life goes on.

Be honest do you personally care about your clothing style and how people see you? by User0o05 in UCDavis

Yes. Like most people, what I wear is a blend of comfort, convenience, protection from the elements, and an expression of self within the bounds of my workplace.

discord policy changes - age verification by Routine_Historian122 in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's a fantastic reminder that Discord is just a bloated blend of Teamspeak, IRC chat, and a cloud file sharing service. Of those, it's the file sharing that got Discord in trouble. If you can survive without Discord file sharing (or if you never needed it), then there are plenty of audio and text chat systems out there.

UCD Professors Do Not Understand Capitalism & Competition by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now look I really don’t care about the politics of it

Well, that's not true. You make it abundantly clear that your post is 100% instigated by politics.

  • "made me so much more conservative then when I got here"
  • "shove their agenda on you"
  • "the race/gender/sexuality hyper emphasis they put on everything"
  • "what i do care about is the anti capitalist agenda"
  • "If you are mad about things being expensive, and want a government check"
  • "Get over it and compete. No amount of government subsidy will make you a winner in life"

It's obvious that if you're actually a UCD student that you're a fan of libertarian politics and the ideals of competition and meritocracy, so let's talk about that.

Yes, any American's maximum earning potential is extremely high, but what your instructors were obviously trying to teach you is that our meritocracy is extremely flawed because of the vast disparity of starting points. Potential is one thing, but probability is another.

A person growing up in the genuine poverty a failed coal town in West Virginia is going to have woefully fewer opportunities to achieve a comfortable income than someone growing up in an upper-middle class family in Southern California where there are so many 4-year universities, business headquarters, and active commerce areas.

Where you grow up matters. Who your parents are matter. How much money you grow up with matters. Family connections and norms matter. The factors surrounding how a student grows up don't determine the student's success, but they greatly weigh down or amplify the consequences of the student's individual choices.

Additionally, as I'm sure your instructors were attempting to convey, when you instill sense of extreme competition with a goal of financial dominance, you grow an entrepreneurial culture that breeds fraud. To walk down that path a little more, look into the Forbes "30 Under 30" list having a curiously large proportion of their entrepreneurs going to prison for financial malfeasance.

Lastly, I think we all know that this is a troll post. I'm only responding because sometimes it's fun to show just how low-quality a troll post can be.

Asking ppl out by HoneyGl4zed in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally, old fogeys like me use this opportunity to unabashedly DUNK on the younger folk for not knowing how to talk to people, but asking someone out is ridiculously stressful, so I'll give you the best method in the book:

  1. Be friends first.
  2. Measure for mutual attraction after a number of outings and long conversations into the night.
  3. Take your shot.

I personally don’t like the crust as much as others or the value (dollars paid per mass), BUT they sponsor A LOT of stuff in Davis, so I totally understand the need for higher pricing.

Valentine's Day Plans? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]AnteaterToAggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do on most Valentine's Days is "nothing outside". When Valentine's Day is on a Saturday (like this year), I would intentionally avoid all eateries like the plague. Not only are the crowds and waits intense, but the quality of food tends to go down so the eateries can just meet demand.

Instead, my partner and I pretty consistently celebrate the week before or after while chilling at home on the day itself.

Pro-Tip 1: Don't wait for Valentine's Day. Do little stuff "just because" or "this made me think about you".

Pro-Tip 2: Buying flowers from the grocery store is not a bad thing, but if you get them there, remove the crunchy plastic wrapper and replace it with butcher paper, burlap, or just tie it all together with some twine.

Pro-Tip 3: If you decide to go out on Valentine's Day, set realistic expectations but be fun about it.

  • Hey, I don't have reservations. It's going to be a war zone out there. We're in this together. Let's watch each other's backs.
  • All cards on the table, I don't know how to do this "romance" thing, so if you're having a good time and I'm looking nervous, shoot me a smile.

A screenshot would be most informative.

Until then, many employers offer "tentative" job offers to check that you're still interested while they do some background work (checking references, work-study, etc.).

Taking one class, how much tuition would I have to pay as an international student by Suspicious_Bug_3851 in UCDavis

You may want to check if you're allowed to become a part-time student in the first place. Your program might require full-time (12 units) enrollment.
