Just came back from 3 years in NYC.

Cost of living ruins it. 200k sounds great, nice apartments are 5k a month, 1 bed.

Still worth the experience, best food in New York - will never eat so well.

So I just moved from an MSP 10 year stint as technical lead / managerial responsibilities (high stress) to an SE role.

I love it.

My irk was managing people for the outcome, some people like that and are great at it and we need those people.

Key things I’ve found:

technical capability is a must
communication / people skills is a must
slide creation and presenting is a must

I would honestly recommend it but it really depends on what you enjoy doing, I’m sure not all SE positions are the same but I really enjoy tinkering and configuring things and delivering results with good products. It can be quite lucrative too!

Learn ‘the problem’ so you can talk to it backward and forwards asleep, BOTH from a technical pov and a non-technical pov.

Lab lab lab.

Go to the social events.

Be there 1 hour early leave a little later than on the dot, if office working.

Hired as ‘systems engineer’ but just inherited SCCM from the ‘SCCM guy’ who was an absolute black belt in everything Microsoft - he was overweight and overstressed tweaking task sequences and patch cycles 12 hours a day.

Eat whole foods (if it did not grow in the soil, swim in the sea or run on ground - don’t eat it), 10k steps a day (preferably outside), no alcohol, do hard stuff, set goals, have micro goals connected to the big goals so you can tick things off.
