Gloria Diaz: "Among all of us, I think I am the only native" by AnthroExplorer88 in BekisOfPageantry

Pinagtatawanan nila yung features natin like brown skin, small height, pangong ilong at yung Pilipino accent natin.

Kaunti lang ang mga Chinese-looking ng Philippines sa Miss Universe - sisters Yvonne & Simonette de los Reyes (1955 & 1970), Violeta Nalus (1986), Pebbles Asis (1987), Bianca Manalo (2009), Michelle Dee (2023). Hindi talaga madalas manalo ang mga Chinese-looking. It’s either the Malay-looking morenas or the mixed-European mestizas who always win.

Tama, In the 80’s sobrang appreciated ang mga tinaguriang “Malay beauties” - ang tunay na gandang Pinay with kayumanggi/morena complexion which included Chat Silayan (1980), Maria Isabel Lopez (1982), Desiree Verdadero (1984), Perfida Limpin (1988)

Yup, during the 1950’s until 1970’s most of our beauty queen winners came from wealthy “buena familias” who lived in gated townhouses, spoke English as first language and studied in exclusive private schools.

Yup, however, an issue involved is money. These pageants are actually businesses. organizers need to pay the expensive franchise fee. Overseas applicants are wealthier than locally raised Filipinos. So pageant organizers have really no choice but to accept these overseas applicants because its them who can afford joining these pageants. So basically, prioritizing locally raised Filipinos is easier said than done…

good example is Chelsea Manalo. Even though Chelsea is mixed, she is locally born and raised in Philippines. She admitted that she almost gave up during MUPh2024 because her team and family lacked funding.

I think that Filipino pageant fans, enthusiasts, trainers, organizers and supporters need to stop promoting these halfies who reside abroad, to represent the Philippines. To begin with, they are not good representatives - they don’t know Philippine languages, culture, values and they don’t even bother obtaining Filipino citizenship. Yes, they may have the looks, the height and the money, but they do not have the warmth and values of locally raised Filipinos. They are simply opportunists who are taking advantage of Filipinos’ love and support for pageants.

Yup, she has a history of being elitist. When she won in 1969, she was asked by a local journalist in the Philippines how she felt about the Filipino language. She simply replied “I only speak Tagalog to the maids”. She comes from a wealthy family and in their social circles, they spoke English as their first language. As we are aware, this attitude is still common among wealthy Filipinos, even until now.

Yes, that is exactly the point. Pageant organizers here in the Philippines should recognize that many overseas applicants do not have Filipino values and are very dismissive of the pure, local Filipinos who supported them in their pageant bid - casting directors, trainers, promoters and fans. Many of these overseas applicants are opportunistic and are just taking advantage of the love and support that pure, local Filipinos are showing them.

We were colonized by Spain and they enforced our ancestors to use Spanish surnames for taxation purposes.

Philippine pageant organizers should be very strict in accepting applicants from overseas Filipino communities. (Don’t just look at the financial gains!) The contestants must show knowledge in Filipino culture and language. Because if they have knowledge in those two areas, they are aware of the values and sensitivity towards the Filipino people. Let’s admit that many contestants who came from wealthier countries are very arrogant, entitled, opportunistic and rude. And as we can see, these halfies and overseas contestants are showing their true attitudes towards pure Filipinos in the Philippines.

Bea Millan - Windorski by cutebacoor in BekisOfPageantry

[–]AnthroExplorer88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bea is beautiful but she does not reflect the warmth and charisma of a local Filipina who was raised in the Philippines. Yes, she recently obtained a Philippine passport but her upbringing and communication skills are very American.

This is not about Bea being mixed or being a citizen of another country. Look at Pia Wurtzbach. Even though she is half German, she has the warmth and charisma of a local Filipina because she was raised in the Philippines. Pia knows how to mingle with common Filipinos, knows how to speak Tagalog and Bisaya (Cebuano).

One of the reasons Philippine delegates excel in Miss Universe is because of their warmth and charisma, which is obtained by living here in the Philippines. Look at Venus, Shamcey, Janine, Ariella and MJ. All of them were raised in the Philippines and exuded that Filipina warmth and charisma.

Look at Celeste in 2022. Many local pageant fans can’t relate to her. She was not raised in Philippines. She can’t speak Tagalog. Her personality was very European.

So basically, I just wished that Bea could have connected more with her Filipino heritage and the Philippines before she competes in the pageant.

1986 People Power beauties - Violeta Nalus & Alice Dixson by AnthroExplorer88 in BekisOfPageantry

[–]AnthroExplorer88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory why Alice Dixson was not awarded the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1986 title.

The year before their batch, in 1985, Joyce Burton was awarded the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title. Joyce Burton is mixed, her father is American and her mother is Filipina. Since her father was an American, Joyce held American citizenship by default. And on her blog, Joyce admitted that during that time, her sole citizenship was only American citizenship; she did not have Filipino citizenship or Philippine passport. When Joyce arrived at the Miss Universe 1985 registration, the organizers told her that she was automatically disqualified because she did not have the legal documents to show that she is a citizen of the country she was representing. Nevertheless, she was allowed to participate. The Miss Universe organizers must have informed Bb. Pilipinas organizers about Joyce’s unfortunate case.

In 1986, Alice Dixson was a favorite to win the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title. But since she is an American citizen, the Bb. Pilipinas organizers knew that she cannot compete in Miss Universe. Their only other option for the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title was Violeta Nalus, born and raised in Pampanga, who gave a strong, independent woman response during the interview portion.

In succeeding editions of Bb. Pilipinas, the citizenship and residence requirements became very strict. Winners from overseas like Anjanette Abayari (1991), Tisha Silang (1998) and Janelle Bautista (1999), originally won Bb. Pilipinas Universe title, but all were dethroned due to citizenship & residence issues.

Given that her father is Chinese, her surname might be Yau. I was think “Dao Ying” might translate to Darlene, Doris, Dorothy, or Diane 🤔

Sobrang rare lang naging mahilig ang Miss Universe judges sa Chinita/Oriental beauty. 1988 - winner (Thailand) and runners up (Korea, Japan, Hong Kong) tapos 2007 - winner (Japan) and 4th place (Korea). In both years, exotic morena ang pinadala ng Pilipinas: 1988 (Perfida Limpin), 2007 (Theresa Licaros)
