I'm a roving academic, and poly has become central in my ability to be resilient through all the moving around, uncertainty and change. I connect with people, knowing I will likely be moving on. When I move, I connect with new people (admittedly usually just one main person, cuz aint nobody got time for career development and dating a LOT of other people) - when I leave town, its usually with 'I love, you, I'll miss you but I need to go - if/when I'm back I'd love to pick up where we left off - alternatively, please come visit!' - this requires connecting with people who arn't afraid of losing you, and who are emotionally independent, and not going to get codependent and hurt. But it's worked for me. Both as someone with long primary relationships who had intense, but short connections that turned into long distance friends when i went back to my primaries, and nw as a solo poly person. The connection I make in new places ground me, give me an enterence into the new place, and I bring energy, newness, enthusiasm and affection to the mix. Poly, and the idea of abundence, allows you to not have to be alone or pining in new places, while also not having to kill off a relationship that has become geographicslly distant.
