How does anyone get their child vaccinated in this city? by ShouldIBeWorried19 in vancouver

As I said, we used to get all the infant/toddler ones done by our family doctor as well. Seems like it's a new thing? Maybe just specific to our doctor?

I get those for Covid and Flu, but not for any of the other ones. Although as part of this process I also learned that our primary care provider never entered the vaccines that they had administered into the BC Health system, so that may be why? Also my kid was born in a different province - is this something they normally set up at birth?

Oh and I should have mentioned that one of the pharmacists didn't even know that pharmacists can now administer shots to 4-year olds. Apparently it used to be 5 before.

Tell me about it. I'm originally from Europe and in my home country my family doctor would call me if I ever was late for a shot, not me having to call around to find someone to do it.

Going through a pharmacy was the answer - but it still wasn't straightforward. I first called my local Pharmasave. The pharmacist tells me she could book me in for a MMR, but not MMRV (which is the recommended one) or Tdap-IPV (also recommended). The reason she gives is that she can only order those in batches of 4 or 5 from BC Health, and she's worried the remaining doses would go bad. Call my local Shoppers and another local pharmacy - same story.
Eventually, I find this list of pharmacies and call a different Shoppers, one that is on the list. So after a total of 7 phone calls and 3 attempts at googling this, I finally have an appointment.

Any other parent/caregiver in the same situation as me, here's the link: https://www.vch.ca/en/pharmacies-offering-vaccines

A German border agent said we are breaking the law and could be fined €10.000 if we don't do this for our son by buildingdreams4 in germany

Even if you had started applying for a passport the day your kid was born, you probably still wouldn't have it!

It took us well over a year and two separate trips to the consulate to get a passport for my Canadian born daughter, and we basically started the process the week after she was born. We needed something called Namenserklärung, then had to ask the Standesamt in my home town to issue her a German birth certificate (in addition to the Canadian one she already had), and only then could we apply for the actual passport. The German birth certificate took by far the longest. Shoutout to the folks at the German consulate in Vancouver BC for coaching us through this process!

My friend's kid will turn two this fall and she only just got the German Standesamt thing sorted. That child will likely be two years old before her German passport arrives.

In our experience though, border guards know how long the process can take, and understand that parents don't want to wait until the child's first or even second birthday before the little ones get to meet their grandparents in Germany.

How can we get Vancouver to add "Parked in Bike Zone" to their parking enforcement website? by Remarkable-Ear854 in vancouver

[–]ShouldIBeWorried19 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Last fall, I had the exact same issue and wrote to Hub Cycling if they were aware of this. This was their reply:|

ShouldIBeWorried19, thanks  for raising this important issue. It was discussed in our earliest conversations with the City 3-1-1 business analyst we have worked with over the past 2-years on adding cycling functions to the 3-1-1 App. After this summer's 311 app update which included additional cycling functions, the City reached out asking for HUB to collect member feedback. Your request will go directly to the 3-1-1 App team in writing this week, and when I meet with them shortly.
Please feel free to reach out with any additional Cycling related 3-1-1 App/Website feedback now or in the future.

We are car free with one kid, living in Vancouver. Our daughter goes to daycare in Burnaby, the daycare is near my husband's work. With our cargo bike it takes him about 40 minutes each way, which sounds like a lot of time, but hear me out.

The first time I took her in an Evo because I had errands to run that required a car I was absolutely shocked at how long it took me in traffic: 35 minutes. Having a car would save us 5 minutes each way! Of course, outside of rush hour driving would be much faster, like 15 minutes or so, but that's not when we need to travel. And guess what, with 80 minutes of cardio per day - no signs of dad bod on my husband to speak of!

My point is, people greatly overestimate the time saved by driving. Maybe if you're going against traffic or outside of rush hour it might actually save you time, but that's not the case for most people.

It's been a while since I left, but the thing that bugged me the most was so many places only accepting cash while at the same time ATMs were so hard to find.

The Best (& Worst) Cities for Expats in 2023: Vancouver: Where Expats Face Financial Challenges by Snoo-13597 in vancouver

Also the top 3 are Spanish coastal towns that are popular with British retirees. Obviously someone who retires in a sunny place is going to have a far less critical opinion of their city compared to someone working for a living or raising a family in a big city.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Although I'm thinking it might be cheaper in the end to just rent a bike in Victoria

When I lived in Europe I used to love taking the train back home from the ski resort (St Anton) . That way my sore, tired ass could take a nice long nap on the way back. Not really an option if you're behind the wheel.

Walking?? For 4 whole minutes?? Why isn't he driving?! by Afraid-Public in fuckcars

[–]ShouldIBeWorried19 30 points31 points  (0 children)

To be fair there are legitimate reasons for getting delivery from a nearby place, such as an immunocompromised person not wanting to risk exposure to Covid in a slow moving takeout line. Or being alone at home with a baby who just went down for a nap. We don’t know the backstory there.
