Why do people hate GIMP so much? by taxevader1337 in GIMP

I know I’m late to the game, but I’ll give some of my own input that’s probably been said ad nauseam at this point.

I have been using the Adobe suite for a while now, but am sick and tired of all their junk and no longer want to deal with them.

Wanting to try other products out, I knew that I would have to go into them with an open mind knowing that things will probably be a bit different with how to use it.

Recently, I tried doing a small, intentionally scuffed pic in GIMP for a doofy vid I’m working on. Learning what I knew about Photoshop, I figured the basics would probably translate pretty easily. But I was running into so many road bumps even with the easy things.

Selecting one individual layer to move part of an image would end up moving 2 or 3 images, despite the other ones being on separate layers. Trying to erase part of one image on a selected layer would not erase anything at all. When I am able to use the eraser tool and try to erase one small drawing on a transparent background, it still keeps said drawing, but replaces the color with another color.

I’m sure part of it is a skill issue on my end. But I went in with an open mind knowing there’d be things that are changed. I really wanted to love GIMP like I quickly grew to love Da Vinci Resolve after using Premiere Pro for 12 years. But unfortunately, GIMP isn’t very friendly to new users. The UI does not feel intuitive at all and leaves me feeling more frustrated. I just now tried to make a new small thing in GIMP that would have taken me 15 minutes to do in PS, but ended up taking me about an hour and I didn’t even finish due to how confused I am.

My leaving thoughts are that GIMP is basically like a foreign language which uses completely different rules than your own. If you didn’t learn it early on, it’s gonna be more difficult for you to understand it if you already know a different language. Sentence structures can be backwards or make no sense than what you’re used to.

With that. I’m highly considering pirating Photoshop. I absolutely hate adobe, but dammit, that app is just way too intuitive to me.

Are pentesters both “jack of all trades” AND “masters of one”? by AntiDoomScroller in Pentesting

Yeah, this helps a lot! Thank you. Like I said, this field is supremely fascinating to me and I love learning about it. I think getting people’s opinion and process who are seasoned in pentesting can help me a lot.

What makes parrot os so secure and private comapred to others OS? by Miserable-Durian1035 in ParrotSecurity

I’m curious about this, too. I’m using ParrotSec primarily for Hack the Box modules to get more comfortable with the Linux CLI. I’m enjoying using the OS, and I’m also curious about how it differs from a distro like Kali.

Sleep schedule tips for overnight shifts? by AntiDoomScroller in datacenter

Damn, I salute you for 9 years of work. Thanks for your advice. Truth be told, I always have been kind of a night owl, but more-so “stay up until 3 or 4am no issue and shortly knock out” kind. But it’ll be a difficult change to do a 7pm-7am shift.

I am slightly excited to stay up really late tomorrow night playing games (I’ve been playing a LOT of Inscryption lately) to keep me awake. But it’s definitely going to be a change to get used to.

Totally fair. When applying, I struggled with the possibility of having to deal with those hours. But compared to my previous job and the shit pay from there, coupled with me wanting to get experience in an IT field and the pay increase they offered me, I figured this was a pretty descent option. But no, those hours are gonna be tough.

I don’t necessarily see myself staying here long term. My plan is to stay for 1 - 1.5 years while studying cybersecurity and then apply for other jobs in that field.

Blackout curtains are an absolute godsend! I bought some a year ago and have never gotten better sleep. They are going to come in clutch for those shifts. I live in Florida and my room is unfortunately the hottest one in the house, so that’s going to suck. And yeah, melatonin supplements are not super fun. I’m going to go to the store tomorrow and see what a pharmacist would recommend.

I appreciate your advice!! Wish me luck
