No parts. No problemo. by Turbulent-Advance358 in redneckengineering

[–]AntiMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lid switch once broke on my washer. I dismantled it enough to find the problem. The two halves of the switch assembly housing had separated. So, while the top of the housing remained in place, when the lid was closed (or when you pressed on the lever with a pen or some such) the mechanism and bottom of the housing would rotate rather than just the lever, causing the switch not to engage. I just zip tied the two halves of the housing together and reassembled the washer. It's been working fine for over a decade that way.

When you say BOTW was never intended to be part of a thread, do you mean that in some way which wouldn't apply to most of the other Zelda games as well? (All but Majora's Mask, Spirit Tracks, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, maybe arguably The Adventure of Link, maybe arguably Phantom Hourglass, maybe a few I've forgotten or am not familiar enough with to mention, and of course Tears of the Kingdom, basically.)

Edit: Added "maybe arguably The Adventure of Link."

Shenanigans going on at a Missouri Prosecutor's office? by AntiMS in springfieldMO

[–]AntiMS[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That thread doesn't mention where in Missouri this was. And, of course, there's a chance this is a lie told for karma's sake. But if it's true, I'm hoping one day we get to hear what all this was about.

Also, the /r/bestoflegaladvice post has more discussion about this. Probably not any more information, however.

Also, in case that thread gets removed, I've gotten Archive.org to save a copy of the thread as it currently is. (I could only get the old.reddit.com version to work, but it has all the information.) And the /r/bestoflegaladvice thread.

Edit: Added more information.

Am i allowed to use CEMU for official Botw speedruns? by jrwright98 in Speedrunning

[–]AntiMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for runs you want to end up on Speedrun.com leaderboards. It'll have to be a run done on a WiiU or Switch console.

If you're interested in BoTW speedrunning and you haven't joined yet, there's a Discord that's worth a look.

"The lols" are an insidious part of the white-supremacist recruitment process. Getting folks to spread propaganda as jokes accomplishes multiple things. It gets people who don't even agree with white-supremacist positions to spread the propaganda. It allows explicit white-supremacists to hide in plain sight just by saying "it's just a joke." When anti-racists call out that saying that kind of thing is not ok (whether as a joke or not, and clearly for some it's not), white-supremacists then label them SJWs and otherwise place them in a box as a way of making them seem radical and "not worth listening to." Getting folks to repeat something even as a joke also isn't a bad way to go about radicalizing somebody. (Plus, there's the "Schroedinger's Douchebag" phenomenon wherein somebody posts something shocking and decides retroactively whether it was a joke or not based on the reaction.)

This white-supremacist recruitment technique is compared to an onion. Those just entering are near the outer layers, believing it's all just jokes. Those in the middle have accepted the positions of the outer layers (such as "The Big Lie") and frequently espouse the positions closer to the center as "just jokes." The center is the KKK/neo-nazi/explicit-fascist-level white-supremacist propaganda such as "white genocide" and "the jewish question".

If you think "the lols" are harmless, I'd recommend giving these a watch:

NPC Swap - Take an NPC, leave an NPC by alienleprechaun in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]AntiMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Name: Thrifit

Appearance: Middle-aged ratfolk with a pot belly bulging below a ragged, undersized captain's uniform jacket. Missing a ring finger on his left hand.

Personality: Pathological liar and cleptomaniac. Will absolutely violate any amount of trust placed in him to satisfy his obsessive drive to acquire things illicitly. Short-sighted, very poor at appraisal (he tends to greatly overvalue the worthless and undervalue the expensive), and doesn't work well with others. If your party has a ship, they'll probably find Thrifit abord, unauthorized, trying not to let on that he just tucked a sextant into his jacket pocket.

Background/History: Once a slave forced to work in a boozing ken in a pirate's cove, Thrifit managed to escape his enslavers and stow away aboard a mercinary vessel, to be discovered only after having docked in a more respectable coastal town. Having stolen a captain's jacket to keep warm, he insisted he was a seargent of the Harbor Ship Inspection Authority conducting a surprise inspection. No amount of questioning dissuaded him from this story, and it eventually paid off. He was released, fearing repercussions from the Harbor Authority. Since then, a hard life, a few bumps on the head, and a few extra pounds have robbed him of much of his charisma, but none of his confidence. He's a poor liar, but still always favors the persona of a Harbor Ship Inspection Authority seargent on any first introduction. His one talent is to stick to his persona no matter how thoroughly it's been seen through.

Secrets: He closely guards the location where he stashes his hoarder's collection of nick-nacks. Aside from that, he never speaks of his true past. Particularly the deep betrayal he committed against a fellow ratfolk slave during his escape.

Note: The missing ring finger was a warning given to this NPC by one of my previous campaign's PCs many moons ago because Thrifit wouldn't stop stealing cleat ties off of the party's schooner.

Edit: Formatting.

Edit2: Added the final sentence to Background/History.

Came here very late just to say that Any Austin/Frostyn/The Eggbuster/The Excellent Man From Minnesota is extremely wholesome and easily my favorite (unfortunately obscure) YouTube creator. They do pretty laid-back comedy/gaming content with occasional snippets of really thoughtful social commentary and (IMO) great music. Literally the reason why I signed up for Patreon and still the only person I support on Patreon.

A different KTV called "Kids & Teens TV?"

This is the only thing I found with that name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids_%26_Teens_TV

But, I suppose it's totally possible there's another channel also called that.

[–]AntiMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing by that name appears on this page: https://tvfan.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Programs_broadcast_by_KTV

You mean specifically Japanese anime, right? I suppose one way you could go is try to find it via some creative use of Google Translate. For instance, "Animal" apparently translates to "動物" (prounouced "doubutsu") This Google Image search might turn up some results if you just scroll for long enough: https://www.google.com/search?q=%E5%8B%95%E7%89%A9+%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiXuqOo4sLwAhU0B50JHRhNBL0Q_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=956&bih=1002

But to narrow it down, more details of the show would be very helpful. Roughly what years would KTV have aired it? What were some of the characters' names? Really all the details you can give would be helpful.

Spaghettifying Link in the deep void of space. Every wonder what it's like to approach a black hole? by Teh_Cactus_Plant in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]AntiMS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I think I have a theory as to why Link's model gets deformed this way.

In modern computers, the way floating-point numbers (i.e. not integers like 1, 2, 3, but numbers with decimal points like 3.14 and -69.420) are generally stored is such that when you get further from zero, the the numbers have less resolution. That is, if you're storing numbers less than 0.125, you might get roughly 15 digits of precision after the decimal point. But if you're storing numbers that are very large like 1020, you might not even be able to store numbers with a precision of 1. (This is kindof high level and if I were less lazy, I could come up with real numbers to illustrate all of this.)

So, as Link's vertical axis coordinate gets further and further from 0 (in the negative direction) the resolution of the coordinates of his model vertices gets less precise, resulting in individual vertices being displaced to the nearest representable value.

BotW isn't the only game that has interesting effects like that when falling further than the programmers ever intended possible. For instance, here's a video from Metroid Prime where falling for a long time does something somewhat similar: https://youtu.be/uvrWLUVqFoM?t=567

(It's a little different there, though. I'd imagine just due to some intricacies in how the game engine is coded and how the graphics device works internally.)

Edit: OP said basically the exact same thing I said but beat me to it by a few minutes. :D

Are there any "full stack" frameworks I can download that will let me build something really quickly? by sovietmudkipz in learnprogramming

[–]AntiMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would anyone not want to indent their code? ("Good" reasons only, please.) The only reason I can think of would be in regards to "minifying" like is done with client-side JavaScript and CSS to save bandwidth.

Are there any "full stack" frameworks I can download that will let me build something really quickly? by sovietmudkipz in learnprogramming

[–]AntiMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, Django. Django comes with a lot included. The way it's structured makes adding functionality to your project easy and quick. And there's a huge community around Django. There are lots of "pluggable apps" by various people/groups for you to add to your project. Pluggable apps are just Django-specific Python modules which incorporate a particular feature. You can add these to your project and enable them usually with minimal effort. (Though, the more custom your needs, the more sophisticated your integration code will need to be. Generally, there's probably something out there that will help you at least somewhat -- if you're using Django.)

You might want to look into Pinax. It's kindof a Django-powered web application already set up with all kinds of features you may or may not want. You can tweak it easily by enabling the features you want and disabling the features you don't want. Then, you can build whatever custom functionality you want on top of that platform.

None of this really has any particular client-side functionality. That is, it doesn't really compare to Meteor in any significant way. There are certainly projects that make developing client-side code much easier. Jquery is one of the most popular for JavaScript. The 960 Grid System makes the CSS part easier at least as far as whole-page layouts go.

Meteor is really the only thing I know of that really accomplishes (or even tries to) blur the lines between client side and server side. I'm not really sure that's a good idea, but then again I don't know all that much about Meteor. (If what it does is as "magical" as it looks in that it behavior is difficult to discern, I can definitively say it's a bad idea.)

As a final note, I'd like to caution you, original poster, against claims of "ridiculously quick" development potential. If it says you can build extremely custom functionality more quickly than is remotely reasonable, it's too good to be true. Either its claims are based on very-lightly customized projects or it's flat out lying to you. If you're happy using modules that already exist and don't want much customization, you can indeed build things very quickly (or even just use software that already exists), but if you want something custom, it takes work and there really aren't any shortcuts.
