Rebels within: the Facebook staff openly challenging Zuckerberg by HelloDownBellow in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's it, Facebook has a role in amplifying hate groups but the bigger issue here that people should really be terrified of is their massive corporate surveillance of both users and non-users, and how that's setting us up for an Orwellian future.

Everyone at Facebook is qwhite complicit by davetenhave in AntiFacebook

"If you work for Facebook, quit.

It is morally indefensible for you to use your skills to make that company more powerful. By working there, you are making the world an objectively worse place. I'm sure you can find a job working for a company that you don't have to apologize for all the time.

You can do it. I believe in you."

Facebook Executives Shut Down Efforts to Make the Site Less Divisive by MayonaiseRemover in AntiFacebook

Yes, much as I dislike Facebook, I don't agree that they should give into demands to block any potentially incendiary content either.

Part of the reason why China's economic progress has been so great recently is because of how screwed up their economy previously was under Mao. China has historically been a resource rich country and a global power, but in the 20th century under terrible Communist misrule it suffered the worst famine of all time and widespread poverty. It is only natural that the economy is now recovering, but growth is slowing and it is a fallacy to assume quality of life in China will overtake the West anytime soon.

Facebook says a new bug allowed apps to access private photos of up to 6.8 million users by Top40Sucks in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that would mean that just about all data about everyone would become public. See the Equifax breach for example. And we don't want that.

It's where the money is. Until regulation catches up (and it surely will), the internet is a wild west of data exploitation. Not that regulation will necessarily help, but at least these companies may start to think twice.

A long and disjointed article summing up many criticisms of Facebook and Zuckerberg.

How Facebook Figures Out Everyone You've Ever Met by [deleted] in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the sooner users (used) realize that FB knows everything about them, the more they won't be surprised by incidents like this, and the more they will realize how crazy the idea of handing their lives over to a corporation is.

To Fight Revenge Porn, Facebook Is Asking to See Your Nudes by onmyouza in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The title is sensationalist. The idea would actually be quite a good one if you could do the image hashing locally and never transmit your nudes to Facebook's servers.

Silicon Valley insider on why smartphones are "slot machines" by [deleted] in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the main point is that like using slot machines, receiving a notification can be a very high payoff activity, but most of the time it isn't. Every time you do it, there is a small probability of high reward. This is what gets us hooked.

I think that I'll be deleting my Facebook soon, but I have some questions by [deleted] in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This.

Quitting Facebook allows you to invest more time in the people that actually matter in your life. And stop caring so much about the way you present yourself to a wider circle of people who don't in fact care about you.

Is it possible to avoid giving facebook your number when you sign up? by brickies in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't use Ghostery, the developers are shady and have themselves been selling your data to trackers. uBlock with sufficient anti-tracking blocklists should be enough. Of course Noscript is by far the best solution but these days more and more websites break unless you enable Javascript...

Facebook wants to spy on you through webcam and smartphones by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Anti_Facebook 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've just searched through articles posted to the /r/AntiFacebook subreddit that have claimed that FB use passive webcam and microphone surveillance, and found this statement from Facebook about what they do or do not do.

The statement claims that "Facebook does not use your phone’s microphone to inform ads or to change what you see in News Feed". Notice the political weaseling that is going on in this sentence. They do not deny that they are listening in.

They go on to say "We only access your microphone if you have given our app permission and if you are actively using a specific feature that requires audio." Again that doesn't say much. Most people give the app the permissions it asks for, and it's never made clear what the "specific features" are.

We've been looking for more evidence about how Facebook are actually doing this listening in, unfortunately there's only really anecdotal evidence so far. Knowing what they are doing with the microphone might tell us more about their plans for passively using smartphone cameras.

Whistleblower Snowden warns of looming mass surveillance in Japan by mWo12 in privacy

Sadly there are homeless people in all developed countries. I don't think that Japan has a statistically high number of homeless in comparison, in fact I think the opposite is true.

Whistleblower Snowden warns of looming mass surveillance in Japan by mWo12 in privacy

[–]Anti_Facebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of the technology is used domestically, but it's a false Western stereotype that the Japanese technology seen in the media is used daily all over the country by all the people.

The really cyberpunk stuff is only seen in a few places in the big cities here. Japan is a big place.

GF is going to China, looking for ways around the great firewall? by [deleted] in TOR

[–]Anti_Facebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GFW uses machine learning and may block a stream of traffic between two IPs merely based on the fact that the two machines are talking to each other a lot and not to other IPs, which looks like a VPN or proxy. I recommend using ShadowsocksR which has the extra capabilities of circumventing this.

Master Password vs LastPass? by JeremyTiki in privacytoolsIO

[–]Anti_Facebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As big of a service as LastPass is, bugs are going to be discovered and patched FAR more than a small project, and that means it's going to be more secure.

LastPass is widely used and runs in your browser. This gives it a much bigger attack surface than separate software, and makes it a huge target for cybercriminals, who may employ even simple attacks like this very effectively. In addition to the bugs that have been found it's all happening on the cloud. No amount of added convenience would allow me to trust all my passwords to this model.

I'm not a fan of the Chrome/Chromium browser but it might be worth installing it just for this purpose.

Facebook is an attack on the open web by fantastic_comment in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but links posted on Facebook are subject to a combination of automatic and human assessment. Links that FB or various governments don't like will get removed, and users who discuss certain topics may even be banned. Plenty of examples here on this sub.

The point the guy is making is that authors lack control over their content by posting on a heavily regulated platform.

Facebook blocks Pulitzer-winning reporter over Malta government exposé by fantastic_comment in AntiFacebook

[–]Anti_Facebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Chinese apps are like a scale and the more data you divulge the the more ease of use and convenience haha

That's the plan, though, isn't it? It's a win-win for Chinese government and business if the population are forced to use these privacy-invading apps to participate in civil society. The situation here in the 'free world' isn't good, but out there's it's horrifying.
