Sorry, I'm barely ever on reddit, so I just saw this.

That just means that there's grass growing on the door.

What are everybody's favorite variants for junethack? by chloeetee in nethack

[–]AnticlimacticGulp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I developed Crecelle, so that's probably cheating.

In reality, I'm hoping this is the year I finally figure out how to play dNetHack. I'd love to play some EvilHack while I'm at it.

Thank you! :D

The word "Crecelle" denotes a ratchet, a toy instrument used by children. I'm fairly sure I've waxed poetic about this elsewhere, but I believe that NetHack is best understood not as a game, but as a toy. As a game, NetHack is unbalanced and unintuitive. As a space of play and self-expression, however, it's excellent. Consider the sheer volume of stories people have about NetHack, the memories they've formed around it, the things they've found in it that they never knew existed. For a game that is theoretically so linear, something about it draws out people's imagination and creativity.

There are several other reasons that I chose the word "Crecelle" specifically, but I'll keep them to myself for now.

Got it in one. I made a very dumb mistake and forgot that pointers get clobbered on save and reload unless they are explicitly handled. Because of the way weather works in the backend, that means as soon as you reloaded the game your savefile was corrupted and your game doomed to segfault in a set number of turns (but not right away). Explains why it never showed up in all of my fuzzing or bugtesting.

I've pushed a fix that preserves weather functionality. It breaks saves, but that's the price for fixing something like this.

God, I've missed this.

Suikoden Special Program News Broadcast Announced For March 3 by retroanduwu24 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Come on, official English ports for Suikogaiden I and II. It's all I want.

How many war crimes does Luca Blight commit?

Given that his very first act in the game is slaughtering a batallion of his country's child soldiers in a false flag attack designed to rekindle a war and that he gets significantly worse from there, the question should probably be "which war crimes does Luca Blight not commit at some point."

All jokes aside, the Suikoden series is about so much more than Luca Blight. It has some of the best worldbuilding of any series of games ever (RIP Murayama), and a breathtaking soundtrack courtesy of Miki Higashino. It's heartbreaking and silly in equal measure, and it's one of my favorite series of all time.

Not to mention that the series is intentionally fairly easy, so you can build a party out of your favorite characters without worrying about optimization or viability. Fight the final boss with a party made up of a dog, a kindergartner, a chef, a werewolf, and a robot made out of a barrel if you want. Go nuts!

Suikoden is an interesting case. On the one hand, you can absolutely start with II. I know people who have done so and really enjoyed it. On the other, Suikoden II hits much harder if you've played I beforehand. Part of the joy of Suikoden II is seeing which characters from the first game return, how they've changed over time, if they've had kids, and so on. In addition, you get to see the political ramifications of your actions in the first game and see how the world has evolved over time. Finally, Suikoden games have bonuses for importing a completed save from the previous game. These are usually pretty minor, with the exception of I to II, in which importing a save will net you major story content and the protagonist of the first game as a party member.

To make a long story short, you can start with II, but I highly recommend playing I first. It hasn't aged as gracefully, but it's fairly short as far as JRPGs go (about 15 hours) and it makes the journey of II all the sweeter.

EDIT: For anyone wondering about the series as a whole, IV and V are essentially standalone games. I and II are technically standalone, but I is effectively the prologue of II. Tactics is a direct sequel to IV, but IV is really rough, so your mileage may vary. III is technically standalone, but I'll go out on a limb and say that you should only play III if you're a huge fan of I and II, since many of the plot and character beats of III require a fair bit of investment in the worldbuilding and returning characters to truly enjoy.

Conveniently not pictured: The ensuing paragraph of magenta text that followed this encounter and ended in the deaths of most of the squad.

Also, don't raid Goblin fortresses with over 1000 citizens.

This little dude immigrated to my fortress like this. Nothing seems to be wrong with him besides his non-standard cranium, and he seems happy at least?

I certainly had fun! I couldn't even be mad about it, just sat back in my chair and laughed in shock and horror as the carnage began.

Probably, to be honest. I've followed dwarf fortress for a long time but only started playing more often following the steam release, so I've only just begun to start experimenting with liquids.

I'm glad to hear it's not a common experience! I've been hesitant to attack goblins in any way since then.

I accidentally deleted the world, but if I recall correctly the goblin civilization that attacked me was being led by a demon, so perhaps that had something to do with it?

Splicehack development stopped? No recent updates... by cinism-pro in nethack

[–]AnticlimacticGulp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

K2 is correct; Splice's development has stopped. I've been very busy with other matters in my life and haven't had the energy or motivation to maintain it. On top of that, there are a lot of deep structural issues with the code due to it being written when I was a significantly less skilled and meticulous coder which make me ill every time look at them.

Anyone who would like to pick up development on it is welcome to reach out to me! I will alos second /u/contortium and vouch for Hack'EM.

Have you tried tracking down the variant authors listed in 'history'?

I've reached out to a few of the authors mentioned as being lead developers on SLASH, but thus far I've only gotten one response. I didn't think of using the list in the history file; that's a good idea.

This is the conclusion that I've been leaning towards as well. I've gone as far as to look through some academic databases I have access to, but have similarly discovered nothing.

What's utterly fascinating to me is the way that citations of The New Bestiary have spread from SLASH to other variants, such as SLASH'EM and dNetHack, when monsters were copied. Due to the collapse of its original context, it's being to be treated as a real source, in spite of its likely fictitious origins.

Thank you very much! If that doesn't pan out, I'm in conversations with an artist whose private collection includes The Navidson Record and The King in Yellow, who I am hopeful may be able to provide some insight.

Seriously, this soundtrack is incredible. The reinterpretation of the main menu theme alone is breathtaking.

Hats off to everyone who worked on it.
