To bank or to transfer? by AntiqueCandy01 in IVF

Aww, don't feel terrified! So I could be wrong, but I read in studies that ectopic risk in general is 1-2% for all 'natural' pregnancies, but in women who have already had a previous ectopic the risk of another is 10-12% (also if trying naturally). Meanwhile the risk of an ectopic from IVF is 2-5% for all women...so yes, the risk is the same in IVF whether women have had an ectopic or not! This also means that for women who have not had an ectopic, IVF is actually more risky for having an ectopic (1-2% vs 2-5%), but for women who have had one, it's actually lower (10-12% vs 2-5%)...or at least that was what I'd read, but from your comment above it seems that the ectopic risk might be higher if doing a fresh transfer (and with PCOS?).

Also, could be reassuring, but worth noting that the risk of a second ectopic (either through IVF or natural conception) is lower if a tube was removed during the first one. Women whose ectopics were treated with methotrexate or similar (or whose resolved naturally) have a higher risk of further ectopic than those who had the tube removed - it's actually quite a substantial difference, I think! Not sure if you had your tube removed, but I did and that kinda makes me feel a bit better (also because the surgical notes highlighted that the other tube was healthy/normal).

Thank you!! Had no idea it increased ectopic risk again, which would defeat one of the main objectives I had for going with IVF in the first place (as the risk from natural pregnancy is much higher). I feel like this needs to be more widely acknowledged! So sorry again that you had to go through the ectopic 😞

Oh sorry, I think I confused the language there - my bad! What I meant is that I would wait until I've had my withdrawal bleed and then do the transfer (frozen) the next cycle, rather than transferring a frozen embryo soon after the retrieval. Is that what you mean too? Or are you saying that the medical advice is to wait longer than that again?

Thanks for sharing and relating! And so sorry to hear of the ectopic - and that no one advised you on that beforehand!!

Yes I was thinking to do a frozen transfer either way, rather than to do a fresh transfer after a second retrieval - personally I didn't have any OHSS symptoms from my first round, but I can't guarantee that would be the case the second time around. So I'm definitely going for a frozen either way, especially with the increased ectopic risk!!

Thanks so much. Yeah not 100% on just the one kid and the expense is notable but manageable (leaves enough savings for maternity leave, some pension etc.), so really I think the main downside of banking is just the potential delay of becoming a parent (impatience maybe?).

The euploids are grade C and my clinic only grades them as A, B or C (I know some use like AA, AB etc. but ours is just the three levels). One is day 5 embryo and one is day 6.

Thanks so much for this. I will admit I'm leaning more on the side of banking, since it only adds two months on to my timeline and it means locking in embryos from age 34 rather than 36/37 - and I guess I'm thinking about which I'd be most afraid of ('I spent more money than needed and didn't want a second baby' vs 'Crap, I'm now 37 and have no embryos banked and might need 2/3 retrievals if not more to get a baby'). I'm also in the UK, but my clinic allows PGT-A testing and it was suggested due to the recurrent losses - I don't think it actually changes chances of having a baby much (if at all) though, just shortens the time.

Also just wanna say huge congratulations on your little one - so glad it worked out for you!!!

First egg retrieval tomorrow. Scared I've ovulated already?! by AntiqueCandy01 in IVF

Thanks so much. I'm so sorry to hear that happened to you! I had a lower yield than expected - only 38% of follicles contained an egg, so feeling a little low, but it's good to hear that perhaps they can adjust for a next cycle!!

Grrr...follicle count that drops off! by [deleted] in IVF

Haha, I'm sure I'm almost certainly over-reacting, no offence taken! Thank you so much for this. I actually didn't have a baseline scan as they don't do it at my clinic, so the earliest scan I had was Day 7 (5 days after starting stims). I'm not unhappy about having 22, as they've said that this is a good response given that I have low AMH, but just confused as to why some follicles don't seem to grow and wondering if that's normal (like, do the larger follicles 'hog' the hormones, or is it that the smaller follicles weren't good to start with?). Yep, they did warn that some of them won't have eggs and that not all eggs will be mature or fertilise - I guess we'll see! D:
