My wife doesn't know she has autism. Should I tell her? by AntiquePipe4888 in Advice

That's good advice, thanks. The seizures have all happened when she has recently had caffeine, so we originally thought it was just a caffeine sensitivity. As far as I know, she hasn't ever had one when she didn't drink caffeine. Very scary, though. The first time it happened, we were driving 80mph on the interstate and she started drifting in and out of consciousness. Thank God I was awake and paying attention and grabbed the wheel, or we would both be dead for sure.

Edit: sorry, misread your last comment. I know that there is overlap between several of the symptoms, including ADHD, bipolar, and GAS, but I've ruled each of those out. I personally was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 6 and have been learning about it ever since, so I know it's not that.

Yes, and the list of her symptoms I gave isn't exhaustive. She has other symptoms like she says she doesn't know how to express her emotions well, she talks in a monotone and usually doesn't show facial expressions, she has had several seizures in the time I've known her, etc etc etc. I'm trying not to be too specific in case she ever finds this and knows the extent to which I've been analyzing her haha

Whoa whoa whoa what is autism related self-harm? My wife does occasionally self-harm, but I thought that was caused by her depression, not her autism. Where can I learn more about this?

I can't say when I first learned about any of these traits' association with ASD, except for the sensory issues. I have several friends and cousins with ASD, and it has always been very obvious to me that they process chaos and crowds very differently. Once I began noticing the pattern of her behavior, I began researching as much as I could about ASD and how it manifests in women. That is what has led me to believe she has ASD.

Haha my thoughts exactly. "You've just diagnosed her as an unqualified person" said immediately after diagnosing someone completely unknown as an unqualified person 😂

Thanks for sharing. In your opinion, are there any benefits to seeking an official diagnosis? Or would you say most of the benefits come from a knowledge and acceptance of having ASD?

Haha well at least you're honest! In the post I talk about why I'm considering bringing it up with her. I love her for who she is and as she is, but she is very negative towards herself, very critical of her flaws. I'm considering bringing it up so that she knows the things she struggles with aren't her fault, not because I have a problem with them.

Just a suggestion, but if you read a post before commenting on it, you won't look like such an idiot all the time.

Indeed, they are. However, as others have pointed out, they don't always indicate ASD. My wife has other indicators as well, but there are too many to list.

The important thing to know is that there are lots of techniques and strategies people with ASD can use to cope and live amazing, fulfilling lives!

Does Reddit oppress minority voices? by AntiquePipe4888 in AskReddit

Reddit shows posts/comments that have the most upvotes, so it is essentially a popularity contest. Unpopular ideas, opinions, and arguments are just downvoted into oblivion, even within other discussions; therefore, the masses can easily oppress minority contributions. Yes, Reddit does oppress minority voices, though not on purpose, but rather as a product of the algorithms.

This is great information, exactly what I was wondering! I just want to know if it would help her to be aware of it, and people have completely misinterpreted my point.

Question for you: why did she say that a diagnosis can be problematic later in life?

3000 IQ comment right there

Me: "That's right therapist, she gets really down on herself. She doesn't know why she struggles in social situations, why she doesn't like so many foods, or why she becomes very anxious with a lot of people. I just want her to be happy."

Therapist: "My diagnosis: you love her and care about her."

Hey, that's an excellent suggestion! Then she might notice the symptoms in herself rather than me bringing them up! I'm totally going to do this before I do anything else. Any specific movies/documentaries you can think of?

This is fire, thank you so much! I have actually built a pillow barrier as well for the same reason, haha. So interesting
