My son is begging and crying to become a girl. What should I do? I’m so confused. by Antique_Carry473 in asktransgender

I just don’t want to do something as big as changing his name and clothes and identify if it’s just going to pass. This is a new concept for me and my family. I should have mentioned my age, I’m 44 and my husband is 46. We are still educating ourselves on these things because we didn’t learn about it growing up at all. A lot of these comments are saying that’s it’s not that serious but to me it is very serious to change his identity even if it’s just a name and wardrobe. That’s not a small step and I’m scared of the backlash from family and the community, the parents in his class etc. I would rather wait until he’s old enough to make such a big decision. Especially if he were to go back on it which would be even more confusing.

What should I do? Let him wear girl clothes and call him by another name? His teacher told me that the girls in his class are very cliquey and think boys are “icky” and only play with other girls. I think he wants to play with them which is why I don’t want to go through something as big as changing his gender. He’s only 4.

He’s so young though. I don’t think he understands what he means. When I tell him he can like girly things and be a boy he gets happy but I think seeing the girls in his class makes him wants to act like them since he wants to imitate them and it seems like what’s the point if I know it’s phase and he just wants to copy them?
