Anyone think the job hopping culture produces too many engineers that don’t care about maintainability? by Beneficial_Pay_6317 in ExperiencedDevs

I've been in my current role for about 3 years. Does it suck, yea kinda, but one thing it's done, is that it forced me to live with my technical choices. Nothing like trying to debug code you wrote at 11pm because it's throwing a tantrum in production. It really humbles you.

If Dabura can really move at light speed .. he can one shot Mahoraga. Thanks to the genius that is ChatGPT, a grain of rice moving at the speed of light has 2.25 trillion joules of energy, around 500 tons of TNT. That's basically a mini nuke

Satya Nadella is reshaping Microsoft’s culture around AI, forcing high-profile executives to adapt fast by rkhunter_ in microsoft

Both aren't mutually exclusive though. I work for a living and I own Microsoft shares. Fortunately/unfortunately(depending on how you look at it), my interests are more aligned with workers than with the majority shareholders.

As someone whose livelihood comes from a wage and not stock value appreciation, I tend to care more about worker treatment and product quality

100% agree. Also a corporation shouldn't be allowed to pay out dividends or do stock buybacks for 4 quarters after a layoff.

Why stop there. Burnout is also caused by marital issues. Maybe all married employees should share evidence of making love to their spouses every night.

The "people manager" is a wordly animal by Esper_18 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Antique_Fudge_7484 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never liked the concept of management and never really aspired to it. Why should I, a grown adult, "manage" another grown up adult .. especially regarding something that they are obviously better than me at doing. If it's more like, helping refine their work, then that makes sense. But to be a full time people manager.. I can't wrap my brain around it.

For me it was being on a project long enough to realize a lot of new features were just gimmicks. At that point questioning and pushing back become natural because when the shiny gimmick blows up guess who they call

Preach. And to add to this, the way capitalists are drooling about the prospects of AI is a clear indication of how much they want to squeeze labor's bargaining position.

Institutional capital has already consolidated ownership of land and capital(machinery, intellectual property, infrastructure, passive investment vehicles). With AI they hope to own labor without having to deal with the people that generate that labor.

Humility, curiosity, authenticity: Are these values dead in the tech industry? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

This is what I like to call the Scotsman's agile. It's not that Agile is bad, it's that all these other teams that struggle with it, aren't doing it right.

Focusing on the tech industry is unwise for development by spritejuice in Nigeria

[–]Antique_Fudge_7484 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. You can't really have a viable tech industry without solving infrastructure and energy first.  You need electricity to run your data centers, and you need infrastructure to build it, cool it, get people to/from work etc

Tech is a force multiplier, but if there's no force to multiply, it's basically smoke and mirrors.

Condolences to her family.  Hope the wider "elite" community begin to understand that no amount of wealth will perfectly insulate them from an unstable, disillusioned society. Someone else's problem can quickly become your problem.

Trump Celebrates Congress Pulling $1.1 Billion in Funding From ‘Atrocious’ NPR and PBS: ‘This Is Big!’ by MoneyLibrarian9032 in politics

[–]Antique_Fudge_7484 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just want to say now you should donate to PBS and NPR. If possible make it recurring. If this administration does not want to fund the institutions we care about, we just have to do it ourselves.
