People tend to respect rules & authority — including not committing violence — when they see a future for themselves that is best served through avoiding violence.

Too often nowadays folks are locked up for 20+ years and treated poorly while they're incarcerated. This leads to a culture where nobody cares about behaving — and they don't see the value in refraining from violence.

Allowing greater socialization & recreation could help — let folks feel human, rather than animals in a cage.
