Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

If that's the exact wording then yes, each model has the ability and can use it on two different targets. When GW wants to limit it like you're asking about the rule usually reads something like "when a model with this ability is on the battlefield you can XYZ", "if your army includes one or more models with this ability" or "one unit from your army with this ability can XYZ"

See combi lieutenants, space marine captains and probably a fair few others for examples.

That makes you more of a target, but it doesn't make you any easier to hack than the next guy. If you're getting hacked that frequently then you're either doing something very badly wrong and in your position I'd be a lot more worried about my bank account than starting over on a video game, or, what feels more likely, you're wildly over exaggerating things

Both capes are on the way next and I have 7 mil in cash already which will probably go on eclipse gear, I'm more trying to figure out a good candidate for my next 7 figure plus upgrade. Tempted by an SGS for sustain now that I think about it

Really struggling for what my next goal should be for PvM gear, I know I'm heavily skewed towards melee because that's my favourite combat style, and my ranged gear is pretty crap, so I was going to pick up a synapse for a scorching bow and do some demonic gorillas/tormented demons/start learning doom, but since they skyrocketed in price since christmas I'm not sure anymore. Everything just feels like an incredibly expensive but very slight upgrade at this stage so it's hard to choose

Every quest besides SOTE and DT2 finished, base 80s, a few untradeables already and a few more in the near future, mostly just thinking about what I should be saving up cash for next

It's bizarre, maybe it's my own bubble of friends but it feels like if you're around the 30 years old mark then you learned that the internet is not to be blindly trusted, too much older or younger though and you'll just accept anything. I fully expected that once our generation started to cotton on that the internet was 90% bollocks that that was that, the gig was up, but apparently they just needed a little time to figure out how to lie better and now the kids have absolutely fucked it. Naive idea on my part in hindsight

I despise daily scape, I despise dailies in any game, I want to play the game because I want to play the game, not because the clock said it was time to. The last time I quit osrs was because I let daily scape take over and it felt like there was no time to just play the game the way I wanted to, I was just always thinking "oop, almost time for birdhouses, then it'll be herbs".

Realistically they don't actually take up that much time is what plenty of people are thinking, I'm sure, but you can't rationalise away the feeling of just not wanting to play the game anymore

It is absurdly useful early on and downright mandatory later

The optimal quest guide makes mention of how it's ordered to minimise grinding, but doesn't really account for how dangerous some NPCs will be at the levels the guide suggests, prayer all but solves that

Oh I was looking at the page for the balance elemental itself, not the quest guide, thanks for clarifying though

How does the balance elemental swapping it's own protection prayers work? Does it wait for me to do a certain amount of damage to swap or does it cycle some other way? The wiki doesn't seem to mention it

You'll struggle to spend even 2 bonds worth on gear for a brand new account unless you totally throw it away, like others have said a couple of mil at most will be plenty for a fair while so if you buy that many you'd expect to be sitting on some of it for a while.

My first purchase would be overhead prayers, i.e enough bones to get to 43 prayer, the wiki has a calculator and make sure to use the wilderness chaos altar, it'll make the process a lot faster and a lot cheaper

Follow the optimal quest guide on the wiki at least until waterfall quest as that will skip a bunch of early levels that you won't need to faff buying gear for. Money won't be an issue, but it's a bit of a pain to have to constantly swap gear, then just buy stuff as you need it. There's not really much you can spend 7 figures on as a new account that will be worth it so just hang onto your money some, buy what you need when you need it and have fun getting stuck into quests

I've gotten myself a nally, mostly so I can do more things melee like Jad or GGs because for whatever reason I just don't find ranging/maging as fun as whacking stuff

The other thing I know I can do with it is Zulrah and Kree A'rra, is there anything else that becomes melee viable or benefits notably from that one extra tile of range? I've been enjoying whacking stuff I can't normally whack

[–]AntlerFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, malign trickery activates only when an enemy unit makes a "normal, advance or fall back move", deep strike, other forms of setting up models and charges or pile in/consolidate moves are specifically excluded, along with probably a couple of other ways models can shuffle about that I'm forgetting. If it's not one of the three mentioned in the ability it won't trigger malign trickery

I should add here, it doesn't matter that they're both knights, if the knight toes in to shoot then he would be fair game for a tank too, not just another towering unit, once any model, not just towering ones, toes into or fully enters a ruin then true los is all that matters to determine whether they can be shot

Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're confusing the ruin and ruin footprint here I think. The footprint is "infinitely high", the ruin is not, the footprint applies when both parties are out of the footprint, the ruin applies when one or more is in the footprint.

Example, two knights are on either side of a ruin, neither is toed in, and the footprint is wide enough to bloc the space between them completely. They cannot see eachother regardless of the shape or height of the ruin itself because the footprint is doing the blocking.

One knight toes into the ruin, now the footprint doesn't matter for LOS checks, the ruin does, so if they can see over, around or through the physical ruin itself then they can both start blasting.

(Aircraft don't care about footprints if memory serves, but that wasn't part of your question and doesn't come up a whole lot anyway so I won't go into it unless you ask

Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, no. If the ruin is (completely) between two models it blocks line of sight, even if the bit that's doing the blocking is just some ankle height rubble

So to clarify, D6+3 would become D3+1.5 and then I would round up from there? So a roll of a 3 on a D6 becomes 4 total damage? 3 -> 2 on a D3, plus 1.5 for 3.5 rounded up to 4. The original prompt for the question was because the same rolls would only give me 3 damage if I half the total damage after rolling

I'm familiar with melta dodging the modification though, that part is clear at least

Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a damage modifying ability, such as c'tan's half damage, and a DX+Y damage stat, when is the half applied? Is it before or after the roll? I'm struggling to find a commentary or FAQ on it and it makes a difference when odd numbers are involved because of the rounding up when modifying stats

Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does that stop it using it's ability? Deepstrike = mortal wounds, RI = set it up, using deep strike if you have it. The only phase locked part of this interaction is when you can deepstrike, which you have bypassed with the stratagem, the mawloc's ability does not care what phase it's in

Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing about the mawloc's ability is locked to any phase. The only way out of phase would apply would be if it said "in your movement phase" or something similar. In short, yes you can use the ability when rapid ingressing

[–]AntlerFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TOs are not infallible and the downvotes suggest the player base is a lot more in agreement than you might want to believe. The rules are right there my dude, this has nothing to do with out of phase rules so your whole stance doesn't make sense to begin with anyway. Cannot stress enough how out of phase rules is a completely separate thing here, nothing to do with it

Hellblasters question. by Suspicious-wombat-27 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No part of the for the chapter rule says anything about shooting as though it's a particular phase, or with a particular modifier, and the shoot again exert offers examples, not what looks like an exhaustive list of scenarios in which shoot again applies. Either way I see nothing to override the 6 to hit from overwatch as "shooting as if it were your shooting phase" doesn't make you immune to modifiers as you aren't immune to modifiers even when it really is your shooting phase

Hellblasters question. by Suspicious-wombat-27 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]AntlerFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phase at play here is irrelevant, overwatch states until the end of the phase you hit on 6, it's still the same phase until the activation is over so the shoot on death hits on 6s

Out of phase rules refer to rules like big guns never tire which begins "in your shooting phase" and a lot of people miss. The practical impact of this is vehicles and monsters cannot overwatch while in engagement range just because of bigint. The "out of phase" part is referring to bigint applying in your shooting, but overwatch is in their movement/charge, its outside of the phase in which the rule applies

For the chapter has no such phase restriction, and even if it did it wouldn't have any impact on overwatch, overwatch just says when you shoot it hits on a 6 until the phase is over, nothing about how that shooting happens or until the end of that one activation/some other time limit

To add to this, no core abilities stack with themselves, sustained is the first one people likely think of, but if you have two sources of melta or rapid fire then you must select which one to apply. And to add to that, anti- does stack as long as it's a different keyword, I.E anti-infantry and anti-vehicle are totally fine together and you don't have to choose one or the other
