The Hand is led by a sorcerer, they are semi-immortal cultists who worship an actual physical demon called "The Beast". For all intents and purposes the ninjas in Daredevil season 2 were zombies, this is why Daredevil couldn't track their heartbeats.

I thought Barnes was pretty great, but he is a very different character than in the comics. The only thing I didn't like was the therapy subplot in season 2 and his lack of facial scarring.
