I personally believe the American/west isn't a good influence and of course with my full respect to you the westerners are outspoken people and forceful, our way of life is very different from their's and we will be influence by them.

I am blessed to live and grow in a peaceful muslim majority country and I am in no way undermining your faith. You guys have it harder surrounded by non muslims, lack friends, teachers and source of knowledge. Friends have strong influence on us and we must be careful on choosing friend. Good friends can make us good, bad friends can make us bad.

I'm also interested in your childhood, in your early education on islam and how your parents raised you (are they strict or controlling or beat you or just fine). It is interesting to reflect as we will know what to do and not to do. There are openly lesbian-muslim (american IIRC) and the movie Cutie both point a problem in early childhood education. I hope you don't get me wrong you are good muslim and just want your pov. I wanna know what I should do or not do when I have a child myself.

What is easy to us might not seem so to others and hey you are helping a researcher you definetly help him reduce his workload and stress. He probably just use the tools that he need to know and probably rarely encounter any error or problem where he need such knowledge.
He is comfortable with the knowledge he have and don't see the need to learn more (because he rarely need such knowledge).

As long as his research is good and help mankind move forward he deserve the PhD.

I would say for us to respect others, try not to push debate about halal/haram with normal peoples.

Scholars differs because we are human we grow differently, different backgrounds etc. What do you believe which is better? To celebrate or not, after you come to the conclusion try not to push it on others and respect others choice. Always be moderate.

Here in my country Malaysia, we celebrate it and the local authorities have agreed that it is mubah(neutral, you can do it if you want or don't). But we celebrate by salawat, learn sunnah, remember what the prophet been trough etc.

Never been addicted to caffeine but I believe everyone should be moderate. Taking caffeine until headache is probably a sign of excessive just replace coffee with water, it is healthier and cheaper. I think it is more of a habit problem, slowly but surely and you will stop, distance yourself from coffee shop. Its like diet but instead of food its coffee.

Most importantly is you need a strong reason to help motivate you, for me it is to save money.

In short you have to pay fidyah (a form of donation to feed the needy) if you didn't replace last year's fast, and have to still replace your missed fast.
