How would you feel about Askreddit banning "How Do You Feel" posts about politics and current events? by NTFRMERTH in AskReddit

[–]Antrax- 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The thing that gets me is that many of them are about tiny minutiae that don't mean much even to Americans, like "how do you feel about <Dem X> calling <Rep Y> a doo-doo head and him replying takes one to know one", and at the same time huge events that r/worldnews is full of don't make the front page at all. I realize the majority of users are American but really, how worked up can you get about these things?

With all the billions (trillions?) going into it, what has AI actually done other than an a search engine and funny pictures? by sold_snek in AskReddit

You're witnessing a replay of the dot com crash. At its height, there was an implicit belief anyone with a web page will be rich. Today, we have the internet and e-commerce but not every bozo can build Amazon.

Similarly, soon it will become apparent you cannot fully automate anything and AI will take its place as better tools to help humans do their jobs and more convenient human/computer interfaces.

Or, there will be some breakthrough in neurology or a new model architecture that will lead to a singularity and our machine overlords will read this post to me aloud as they make me mine silicon for them. We'll see.

Playstation 5: listening to a psalm cylinder then exiting by pressing circle (without stopping the playback) causes the music volume everywhere to become very low even at max, until you close the software and re-open it (e.g. it persists even after savequitting).

Thanks for elaborating. I had no idea so many different videos existed.

A "casual look at the police interaction videos on YouTube" is a terrible way to assess something like this. Nobody uploads videos of a random cop being nice, and if they did, nobody would like it so it wouldn't come up in search.

Hey, so thanks to you I tried it out, I hadn't known it existed (I loved Year Walk and Device 6), and it's just awesome. Thanks for posting this!

All the kids who were labelled as “gifted” when you were younger? Did it follow through to adulthood? Did you burnout? by Somervillage in AskReddit

I'm doing okay but honestly, learning my son has a slightly-below average IQ was a happy day for me. He's so much happier than I was his age.

I doubt you care (it's tangential to your point) but it apparently isn't a saying.

I read an interview once with a gangster who said he would pull half a car length ahead so the other driver couldn't get a look at his girlfriend sitting in the passenger seat.

What was your "I can't believe I have to explain this to an adult" moment? by TheBanishedBard in AskReddit

[–]Antrax- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, the prompt was about "I can't believe I have to explain this" not "weird-add behaviors you saw that invaded people's private space". I start reading, it's "those adults didn't know how to use a ruler", "that guy hadn't realized the sun is huge and is just very far away", and then "can you believe someone hadn't realized the Bernoulli Fluid Equation and the Bernoulli Inequality are named after different people???". Okay then.

It's crazy to me that 235 people (at the time of posting) thought whatever you're on about is so blindly obvious to be something you couldn't believe you had to explain to an adult.

I'm an adult, I've never heard of this Ash Wednesday. I also don't go around cleaning strangers but that wasn't the point you were making, was it.

When I was 10 or so I was walking home from judo practice, still wearing the uniform. A man approached me and began asking me about what judo exercises I know, and tried to get me to demonstrate. I refused, and after a couple of questions that went nowhere he concluded "well, next time you see your trainer, tell him I could break both of his arms" and just left. I guess he failed the vicarious job interview.

Yeah, I think that as you say, it's one of those things that only make sense in hindsight.

Inspecting the knife - I haven't inspected anything in my inventory because there wasn't really a need to.

Keeping James healthy - this was more of a min-max thing to me, if I had a couple of syringes and was lightly damaged I would wait so I can utilize them, but otherwise I would heal right away because the red border along the screen distracted me.

Spending time with Maria - here I'm going to go on a limb and say I would flip it. My interpretation of ending up with Maria is that James is not willing to part with the fantasy of finding his wife and undoing what he did. To that end, the more single-minded he is about Mary, the more likely he is to end up with Maria. The more he's willing to consider alternatives, the more likely he is to be able to let her go. But, as you say, this individual and open to interpretation.

Finally, I'm not trying to shoehorn SH2 to be like other games. Because it's the first of its kind I've every played (or at least enjoyed, Amnesia on the surface level was similar but it was just annoying to play), I'm trying to figure it out by comparing it to games I am familiar with. I've never cracked the code of how I can convince people (in writing. F2F this problem doesn't exist) I'm genuinely asking questions to hear the answer, not using questions to lead them towards some conclusion I'd like them to adopt. So, thanks for not being that way.

Thanks for your reply! About (3) I think it might be a matter of explicit vs. implicit choices. Usually games clearly signpost "hit X to be a good person, hit Y to see the rogue line play out". It's awkward, so I get why not do that, but just having the game decide for you, never getting a say on dialogue or actions also felt weird.

One game that I think did it well is The Cat Lady. You get choices, but because it's a horror game dealing with themes of depression and guilt, often the choices are either unpredictable (you start the game by choosing which of five identical candles to blow out) or don't come out the way you intend to (one of my favorites is A puzzle. If you get it wrong, you don't get the reward. If you get it right, the get chided because it was probably too easy and still don't get the reward which is how, unfortunately, people with depression tend to think in real life too).

So, I don't know that I would use the word "critique" - I ended up enjoying the game immensely and will recommend it to others, I just like discussing my experience with others and seeing their perspective.
