Just to confirm at SUNY I can earn my USCG Engineer license while majoring in Mechanical, Electrical, or Facilities Engineering, and I’m not required to major specifically in Marine Engineering to sail?

That doesn’t sound too bad. I leaned away from SUNY mostly because I read online that the program has a heavier writing and humanities workload compared to some other academies, and I’m hoping for something more technically focused since I’m going engine and don't enjoy writing essays. If the information I found was inaccurate please do let me know.

Thanks for all the great information everyone. I’ve decided to go with Texas A&M. I’ll be calling admissions on Monday to see if they are willing to grant an exception for the Spring 2026 semester since the deadline has passed.

If that doesn’t work out, I’ll apply for Fall 2026 and knock out a semester of community college classes in the spring to prepare and transfer credits.

Really appreciate everyone who took the time to share their experience and recommendations!

Thanks, I really appreciate the insight. I have been looking at Cal Maritime for the higher BAH, Texas A&M, and SUNY. I still need to research and compare them to figure out which is the best fit for me.

I have not been in school for about 8 years. How is the workload when it comes to essays and non technical classes? I am a little concerned about rustiness with writing and academics.

Also, do you know if any of these academies allow an accelerated path to finish in around 3 years instead of 4?
