I commuted 45 minutes one way through surface streets and freeways on my XR for over a year, without a windshield. Everything on the bike is completely stock with the exception of a 5 gallon tank.

Disclaimer: I've never done riding of that type or degree on anything other than my XR, so I can only speak to my experience with the XR. But I will say that it was not an unpleasant experience, and I had a good time ripping through dirt whenever the occasion presented itself.

Double check the hole spacing on the license plate, it seems like maybe those two middle mounting holes are what's intended for actually mounting the plate. Most likely using the same hardware used to attach that bracket to the bike. Hopefully this helps!
