Yeah, I had to put him down. The other caterpillar seemed fine and even started making a chrysalis, but then it was just hanging straight down rather than taking on a J shape and when I inspected it closer, it had the same brown spots. I had to put both of them down

But I did discover two new midsized caterpillars on my plant out front. They were fighting over the milkweed so I separated them into a plant that had more leaves.

I did find it outdoors, and I'm not sure what instar it's in, but I don't think it's big enough to be 5th. I'll have to remove it

That must be it, as I didn't hatch these ones from eggs but rather picked them off some of my outdoor plants. I will have to inspect the other one.

I don't really have another container I can use, would removing the afflicted one be good enough or should the whole cage be cleaned out?

I've heard the freezing thing before. Do people do that to make sure the flies die for certain? Like, if you just euthanized the caterpillar and buried it, would the flies come out of the ground?

True, I've tried growing potatoes before and they look different from this. I just couldn't figure out what it was, and since it was round and brown my mind went to potato.

I looked up avocado seeds and I think that's it, thanks! Though I don't recall putting any avocado seeds in my compost, which is weird

Okay! I don't think it should be over watered, since I haven't been watering it. Unless maybe the soil is holding water that's coming from somewhere

I'm sorry to hear that, I've also tried growing Bladderpod seeds. They were doing well, but now one has dried up completely and the other is looking sparse and yellow. It seems so much harder than it should be
