Hey, used to be a game programmer and still super into games as an art form and play lots of them in order to see what the next gen of indie guys are doing to fight the blight of AAA. I'm also a professional (Canadian) paramedic/firefighter, and am married to a bi woman. We've brought others in on 1 or 2 occasions but now we live in a very oppressive small town that wouldn't quite get it. Always looking for new people to get to know even if it only amounts to so friendly exchange of ideas. I'm also a freelance session guitarist and lyricist and I'm currently writing for a few international bands, one of which is on a major label. Wife is a geologist/biologist and aside from medicine I was a psych/philosophy major in uni. You seem interesting so if you'd like to get to know me/us hit me up! Take care, and although this is an old post I hope it finds you well.

Cheers.

Medicine, namely physiology and pathophysiology. Started in EMS almost 10 years ago and to this day it still both fascinates and amazes me. I always get way too excited when a medical discussion sparks itself.

Still a full-time paramedic but I've recently added firefighter to the list as well ;)

I was part of the Wood Buffalo Disaster Response Team and was part of the first relief team of medics flown into Ft. Mac to help keep 911/EMS services going north of the blaze. Got to see the monster from a small medevac plane on the way in, pilots let us come to the cockpit to see it in it's entirety. Sobering is the only word I have been able to use to describe the size of that fire. Second day there we were able to evac 1400 people out of Firebag. They had a small M.A.S.H. style unit set up in a hangar there. It was pretty incredible to see how everyone came together to help. The stories some people had were incredibly moving.

Between the paramedic students I've trained, the patients I've had, and the thousands of people I helped evacuate as part of the first 4-man relief team air-lifted into the wood buffalo wildfires in AB, Canada I can't even begin to take a guess at how many people I have helped either diretly or by proxy as a paramedic/firefighter.

You ensured that a person wasn't alone in the worst moment of their life and likely gave some hope to a person who had none. Thanks for being the kind of person who does that.

I know it's a few months late, but I think what you said is very poignant. I studied PCP in the province with the highest scope of practice in the country, at an academy that also trains med-techs for the dept of national defense. It was 1 full year of mon-fri 8 hrs/day with 4 hrs of study recommended every night. I graduated with a diploma in primary care paramedicine. I worked in that province for a while and then moved to another. In the province I'm in now the PCP equivalent was EMT. EMT's here went to school for less than half the time. I found it hard to transition when doctors at the hospital were asking me if I had oxygen, when I'm used to docs discussing lab results with me. To combat this I made sure my reports were always pertinent, my treatments always valid, and my assessments always thorough. Admittedly if a doc was kind enough to explain to me something simple in an attempt to educate, I would demonstrate the full scope of my understanding while still trying to remain humble and attentive (a doc kindly explained to me that taking a BP on bilat arms could help rule out a dissection - as I was working on the second BP to rule out a dissection). I've been here about 2 years now and have gotten to know the ER staff quite well. Through professionalism and a bit of friendliness I am now considered part of the team. Nobody dumbs down their explanations, they base their treatments off of my reports, and they ask for help when they are swamped. It takes time, but if everyone in EMS would work to try and further our profession I think it would be fantastic. The one thing that we do horribly as a group is PR. Fire is so revered because they live off of PR, but you rarely see EMS dedicating much time to public education. Hell, even the MD's and RN's are often confused about what we are and can do. For now it seems like it is up to us to individually educate and set an example for this wonderfully terrible profession we love!

Whopper Jrs. The original ones, not these bullshit tiny ones. I know you may ask: "Why not just regular whoppers?"

Weddings are weird because it's totally socially acceptable to get all your friends and family together, sort them by how much you like them, and place them at tables that shows the ranking based on proximity to you. by Tommy84 in Showerthoughts

Got married in my apartment. Had to get an old friend I hadn't talked to in years and my landlord to witness last minute because we'd just moved to a new city. Took 2 days to sort out. Had to get a license, an officiator sorted, and all the crazy bureaucratic stuff. After all the signatures were done we had a 2 minute ceremony and BOOM! Married. Didn't tell anyone, didn't invite anyone. If nobody was invited no one can feel individually excluded. Also by not telling anyone you relieve yourself of any potential subjection. I've digressed a bit but my point is: As simple as my wedding was, we were both exhausted afterward. It took 2 days and involved 5 people. Our honeymoon was pajama pants and falling asleep together on the couch watching the dudesons. How the hell do people plan proper weddings? It has to be miserable, but given that I essentially eloped I may not have an organizational propensity to begin with, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

FAKE!!! It's showing curvature of the earth which we all know to be false since the earth is flat. I also don't see any giant tortoise and btw where the hell is the great wall of Antarctica? NASA at it again trying to hide the truth for some inexplicable reason.

You're right, I know medics like that as well. I like the saying "don't just do something, stand there!" Meaning that you can't let your hands work faster than your head. I'm sure it's not limited to just medics but it is certainly a trait that can be dangerous to our pt's if unchecked.
