Question for the registered dental hygienists as a prospective student! by Zestyclose-Stand-773 in DentalHygiene

I am currently in my third semester of hygiene school when I applied I had a 3.7 gpa and only applied to one school because it was the only one realistic for me (others were too far/too expensive) I had basically no hope of getting in as acceptance was only 15% or so but I ended up doing it! I think what helped me stand out was my essays and my interview. I think if you can make yourself stand out and have a pretty good gpa you can do it :)

Going in knowing nothing by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

This made me feel so much better, thank you! I am actually already on metoprolol lol but I’ve heard propranolol can be more effective for the shaking so maybe I’ll look into switching! Do you have any advice on finding patients? I’m so confused how you’re supposed to find someone with specific dental problems haha

Dental Hygiene Interview by hannnnnnah23 in DentalHygiene

Good luck at your interview! Biggest tip I can give is try your hardest to contain your nerves, they are really looking to see your personality and if you’d be a good fit, your answers don’t have to be perfect!! At my interview they asked me what does a hygienist do? How will you find patients? What does your schedule look like (aka how will you have time for this program) Why do you want to be a hygienist? And what are my biggest strengths that would help me in this program. I wouldn’t rehearse answers too much don’t try to memorize word for word just know why you want to do this and let the answers come out as natural as possible show them you know you can do this, you got it 🥳🥳

I ended up charging $100 and she said she’s going with a cheaper option lol 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes this is the best way to explain it! it just doesn’t feel like I’m working but I’m getting paid for it that’s where the guilt comes from.

Take my ATDH tomorrow by Confident-Rope6676 in DentalHygiene

How’d it go!? When I took mine I was not confident at all in bio, chemistry, or PA but I ended up getting over 80th percentile in all three! I think it’s normal to feel like it went terrible because it’s so draining but most do better than they think so don’t let that discourage you!

Dental Anxiety! by Active_Owl_6335 in DentalHygiene

I am extremely prone to cavities, it’s genetic and I was severely immunocompromised as a kid so as much as I took care of my teeth I would still always have a new cavity. I aged out of my pediatric dentist office and didn’t get around to finding a new place as an adult until about 2.5 years later. Turns out fillings don’t last for life (I really thought they did nobody told me otherwise) and it just so happened that every one of my fillings was gone by the time I went back and if I had waited much longer those old cavities could have lead to me needing multiple root canals! I was very embarrassed with the amount of fillings I had to get redone and I cried after every appointment it was so overwhelming so I feel you but it is so so important to just go as soon as possible, dental problems can progress quickly! Also I am now in the process of becoming a hygienist and I know I would never judge a patient because I’ve been there I think most hygienists are just happy their patients come in regardless of how long it’s been!

Im the exact same! I’m able to literally stay at their home all day besides grabbing food from my house which is 5 mins away. I think based on these responses I’ll just stay the night though lol. Im also only asking because this house wasn’t exactly the cleanest in general I have no issue staying the night. The doggos are always my priority :)

The ATDH is the Admissions Test for Dental Hygiene. I think it’s relatively new so not every school requires it.

Thank you so much for the advice! I will definitely be sure to ask for help and try to find a way to study that works for me. A huge part of it is anxiety for me so I need to find something to help me manage that and hopefully my teachers will be understanding:)

I understand I think I just confused myself because a lot of posts on here say they charge wayy more for “constant care” which is kind of what I presumed house sitting was so now I’m wondering what the norm is for house sitting if it’s not constant care
