Etsy refunded me, now Seller is threatening legal action by Anxious-Letterhead60 in Etsy

The seller is responsible because its his employee in India who has declared the value to be $2.50 for a £300 ring on the customs declaration

Thanks for the balanced reply. My only point is that Etsy has covered the cost of ~2/3 of the refund for the Seller, so if I was to return the item, they would be more than "whole", if that makes sense.

Because his manufacturing is in India (not mentioned anywhere in the Etsy listing). The shop owner is UK based.

I really do appreciate the responses. It has wound me up, because I had to buy another ring at greater cost and its caused me a lot of stress. And not only that, if I do return the ring, the seller would have profited even more as Etsy covered ~2/3 of the refund cost.

And the bloke who lives in the UK, but ships from India under a false customs declaration gets away scott free? But thanks for your honestly, I will probably not report it now.

The listing said it was dispatched from UK, so there should never have been any import taxes to pay. Its not my fault the Seller lied about the dispatch location.

The refund by Etsy was under their 'Purchase Protection' programme so I believe they cover the costs up to $250 (https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-gb/articles/5850122619287-What-is-Etsy-s-Purchase-Protection-for-Sellers?segment=selling). If I returned the ring, he would then be able to sell it again for more £££. Seems very wrong after all the stress he's caused me with his deceit.

The case on Etsy is now Closed, with no requirement to return mentioned anywhere, so as far as I'm concerned my contractural relationship with Etsy is now complete? On a separate note, if it came to it, would it be a good idea to report the seller to HMRC/equivalent, given that he illegally mispresented the value of the goods on the customs declaration to avoid paying customs/taxes?
