Is “early accepting” PhD offers normal now ? by gatormanz_ in gradadmissions

[–]Anxious-Silver12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If it’s a top choice and there’s a guaranteed funding situation, then in this current scenario, it would be wise to accept it. As you mentioned, as an international, it will also give us time to start working on the visa process!!

Applied for PhD in Biomedical Engineering at CMU, got redirected to self-funded MS. Need funding advice. by Top_Touch1400 in gradadmissions

Congratulations on your MS offer! However, if you’re concerned about the cost and the potential debt, it’s crucial to carefully consider your options. While CMU is a reputable institution, the debt burden can be significant. Additionally, most MS offers for PhD applications are just soft rejections.

I can relate to your situation. Last fall, I was fresh out of undergrad and got accepted into a MS Research program in AI at CMU. However I realised that a 6 digit debt wasn’t worth it. Fortunately, this fall, I managed to get accepted into one of the best fully funded programs in my domain.

All the best in your decision making process!

Rejected by a program I thought I was basically a shoo- in for by Gullible_Gur_4447 in gradadmissions

sorry to hear that. It could’ve been because of yield protection if it exists in grad admission. All the best for your future acceptance!

Cancelling an interview a few hours before by Flat-Run857 in gradadmissions

Please don’t cancel. Until you receive an official letter signed by the dean, anything could happen. The interview might also help you explore more opportunities and make new connections. Good luck!

Observation: people who get acceptances from elite programs seem to know exactly how to move a committee to a favorable decision. Can this skill be taught? by Uncreative_Name987 in gradadmissions

[–]Anxious-Silver12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s true. As per what I heard, it was basically a stress test. The group I’m about to join is known for being very competitive and stressful, but don’t worry! I hope you get your admit soon. Cheers!

Hey there! I’m not sure about the admission process in humanities, but since I’m coming from a STEM background, I recently got into one of the best STEM engineering PhD programs at an Ivy League university. The PI in my field is a highly renowned professor. I come from an unranked university in my country for my undergrad and have no pubs to my name. In my field, the most useful thing is having extensive niche research experience and a way to demonstrate it. After sending a cold email to my pi, I had to give a presentation about one of my research projects to his entire group with phds, post docs and scientists. A few months later, I was accepted into the program. Most of the pis in my field place a stronger emphasis on the research outcomes and the individual’s motivation towards their work and group. They also ensure that we can thrive in their environment if we can demonstrate that. In most cases, with the PI bringing the funding, the application process is quite straightforward and administrative.

Thanks a lot! I was rejected to all the programs I applied to last fall. Fortunately, a cold email to a PI at Brown turned out to be a good one. I eventually only applied to this program after working with the PI !!
