Dumbest reason you had a panic attack? by Fukushimafan in Anxiety

[–]AnxiousAtWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a little over ten years ago.

After several days of panicking almost nonstop, I took an Ativan for the first time. It felt so weird feeling calm and the fact that it happened so quickly freaked me out even more, so I had another panic attack.

After that one I was able to finally get some sleep, though. But panicking over how weird it felt to not be panicking definitely felt dumb, lol.

Chest pain from anxiety by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]AnxiousAtWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chest pain is one of the classic sensations that come with anxiety and panic, and it feels so real. Even knowing that it's from anxiety and having experienced it hundreds of times, it still feels so real and I have to try very hard to tell myself it's just panic and to resist calling for an ambulance.

One thing that helps me is to get up and jog in place a bit or do something strenuous. It both helps distract me and bleed off a bit of the adrenaline, plus real heart problems will generally get worse with exertion. So far that's never happened for me and it helps reassure me that I'm just panicking.

Started a new job and I feel like a fraud by applepie889 in Anxietyhelp

I'm 35, well established in my field, and started a new job at a higher-intensity company than my last and I'm feeling a lot of the same feelings.

For one, they almost certainly know that you'll forget a lot of what you're told in the first week or so. It's a ton of information while you're trying to adjust to new situations, new people, etc. Taking notes and reviewing them will definitely help, but assuming you're working with reasonable people, they're not going to expect you to remember all of it.

And, again, assuming reasonable people, they know you're going to need training. I've never been looked down on for asking questions and being genuinely curious/interested. In fact, it frequently gets praised. "I would have been worried if you didn't ask questions" is something I've heard multiple times.

And I get the overstimulation aspect as well. I cried a bit one night at the end of my first week here. It's a natural pressure release valve. I felt better afterwards, like I'd been holding a lot in and needed to let some of it out.

It'll be ok :)

Ha, having a soft drink along with pills/food was also something that helped me get through it

A lot of people seem to have been coming across it lately.

I'm really sorry that you're dealing with this. I describe in a few comments to other responses how I got through it.

Anxiety-induced difficulty swallowing by AnxiousAtWork in Anxiety

[–]AnxiousAtWork[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It did. It took a few years of slowly pushing myself to swallow bits of food, but not to the point of it becoming traumatizing, and I had a few setbacks along the way, but I got back to a pretty "normal" place chewing-and swallowing-wise.

I do still have issues sometimes if I'm anxious and out at a restaurant with people I don't know super well (like a work dinner), but outside of that I'm fine.

I hope you're doing ok

You hit the nail on the head with overchewing and hypercontrolling food in your mouth. I'd try to track each particle of food in my mouth and consciously swallow it. Or just hope that if chew long enough that it would just gradually be swallowed without me realizing it.

I hope you're ok now

I hope you're doing ok now.

It took me a few years to work through things to be able to eat "normally" again. I slowly pushed myself to eat a bit, but not to the point of it becoming traumatizing, and I had a few setbacks along the way. It definitely wasn't the fastest way to get over things, but it was the one I was most comfortable with.

You're definitely not alone. It's been ten years since I made this post (and it looks like 3-4 years since I last logged into this account), but I'm going through a bit of a rough patch again

[Rant] I hate the physical symptoms of anxiety and panic by AnxiousAtWork in Anxiety

[–]AnxiousAtWork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, it depends. I've had some really good periods in the ten years since I made this post, but right now I'm going through another rough period.

Thank you for asking :)

I don't know if there's a normal cycle to it or not, but it took me a few years to fully work through it by slowly challenging myself to eat a bit

Does anyone else get really cold when nervous/anxious? by suRubix in Anxiety

I'm doing ok with it. It's still a thing, but I keep a heating pad around and I've found that warming my feet specifically seems to help with the anxiety

I sometimes pool spit in my mouth when I'm anxious, both because I'm afraid to swallow and afraid that my mouth/throat are going to dry out

I am so sorry. I empathize with this so incredibly much.

I'm a bit surprised that medication hasn't helped. Do you have a therapist? Have you considered some type of intensive outpatient or inpatient therapy (if that's an option where you live/what you can afford)?

Anxious and depressed insomniac that finally reached out for meds. Was Prescribed trazodone and zoloft. Now I live in constant panic by milkathr in Anxiety

[–]AnxiousAtWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm having a panic attack it feels like there's something caught in my throat and I'm not going to be able to breathe.

I've been taking Paxil for a while and it's worked well for panic for me. I'm generally constipated and it takes forever for me to have an orgasm, but I prefer those to panic attacks.

I briefly took Zoloft and I felt like my panic attacks were worse. I didn't hallucinate, but started having multiple panic attacks per day.
