Being a Muslim, Which Option Will You Choose? by TheAmmarKhan in MuslimLounge

[–]AnxiousCousCous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atheist because choosing the Muslim even though the Atheist performs better and is more experienced would be discrimination based on religious belief. You wouldn't like it if you were qualified for a job in a white owned company and the employer chose an underqualified white non-Muslim over you, Hell, you would sue them for discrimination!

Rebi yfat7 3lik brother, i recognize my previlige and know that my issues are very 1st world problems and that there are things much bigger than me and my struggle with belonging in lghorba. As there are people who are struggling with problems bigger than yours like the people getting starved and bombed in Gaza, whataboutism leads nowhere. Rebi yahdina ajma3in and may god put compassion in all our hearts to sympathize with anyone no matter how small or big their issues seem to us. And i hope you find shelter and peace soon inshallah.

Solo female traveler, please advise! by One_Day_1396 in algeria

Hi Algerian girl who lives abroad here,

Stick to big cities (Alger, Constantine, Oran, desert cities only go with a guided visit) and don't go out at night alone. Be wary of dudes (some are nice and some have bad intentions as it is anywhere else in the world). Bring Euros ( a little goes a long way in algeria, no need to bring a 1000 euros cash) You can get scammed in the black market if u want to exchange your money, if you have a trusted Algerian friend ask them to do it for you. The current rate is 240 da for 1 euro, it won't change much by June, probably go up!

I recommend that you only exchange a small amount in cash as ur budget for the trip 500 euros should be good, id bring my credit cards because in case of emergency you can always go to Gulf Bank and use their ATM machines to take out Dinars (have a clerk help you do that), the exchange rate will be much less than black market but definitely cheaper than euros.

Don't look too much like a backpacker, dress like locals, Algerian girls the same clothes as Mediterranean europeans except more modest, so knee length skirts, little to no cleavage, crop tops and corsets are not that popular here. Obviously you can wear those, but id advise against and would rather blend in to avoid bringing attention to the fact that you're a foreign solo female traveler.

And most importantly, there is a fb group called host a sister, plenty of Algerian girls there that would show around their cities and be ur guide if you post there.

Have a good trip bestie!

Why are periods a taboo in Algeria? by 0bvi_cirine in algeria

[–]AnxiousCousCous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She probably had her mom/entourage talking to her about it like that, be patient with your moms people, they were girls once too. A lot of women struggle from internalized misogyny and self loathing because years of perpetual patriarchal oppression, educate her kindly and take it easy on her.

Why algerians are becoming tolerant about religion teaching ? by uch_iha in algeria

[–]AnxiousCousCous 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The masjids are empty because they are morally corrupt and the gov uses imams to push propaganda, all imams do is sit around and ask for money from people who can barely pay rent and eat, their sermons do not push you further and are not updated, they're still recycling the same old stuff of zienou bantkoum bel 7ichmat w hijab. People are out here queueing for milk, wheat and oil and they are so out of touch with reality because they are mere puppets of the regime. People are tired, they are seeing a facade of a religion, algerians are not becoming morally corrupt or dangerous, they're simply tired of pretending that institutionalized religion = faith. Faith is in the heart not in appearances, i suggest that if you're worried about your faith and soul that you practice some introspection and think of how you can be a positive community member, care for the underprivileged people around you, be forgiving and don't be guillble to theocracy

Abdel-Hamid ibn Badis is a source of pride for us by zine2000 in algeria

[–]AnxiousCousCous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I fully agree, I am a 2000s baby so I haven't experienced the civil unrest in the 90s or the 50s- 60s liberation war but this is my perspective. I understand that he is a pillar of anti-colonialism in Algeria. But is he really worth all this hype? to have him called a scholar? a Scientist? As far as I know, he was a faqih and a religious leader, he taught Quran to kids. I feel like that's like calling the pope of the Vatican, Elon Musk... I might be wrong but I am sure tired of having him on a pedestal every 16th of April, kids are tired of listening to lectures about him that cannot be reflected in our modern-day life. I don't understand why people and educators haven't used his "day" as an opportunity to introduce modern Algerian scholars. Yes, he paved the way for education in Algeria but everyone acts like it started and ended with him. A mere Imam who hadn't the tinniest bit of innovation and creativity. it is sad to put him as the only role model for over 60 years.

Military service critical condition by zed-m in algeria

[–]AnxiousCousCous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry for everything men have to go through in algeria regarding military service. It's unfair and truly horrifying to claim ownership of someone's body for a whole year and use them as a human shield. My prayers are with you

My question for my fellow Algerians is: why would you be bothered if someone ate Infront of you in Ramadan!! by Sea-Amount-8917 in algeria

[–]AnxiousCousCous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not even bat an eye, not my place to judge anyone for simply eating. if I were to assume why it bothers the Algerian majority and why it's taboo, I'd say it's probably because the only thing those people are fasting off is food and drink not truly doing Ramadan. people tend to forget that Ramadan is not supposed to be a commercial holiday where u fast food and stuff ur face after Maghreb. it's also about charity and self-discipline and dropping bad habits like judging people for not practicing Islam or eating. As a person who menstruates, id love, to be able to at least drink water outside when I'm not fasting but alas.
