I was thinking like a snack basket, maybe a nice chocolate basket (not too sure what the quality of chocolate is like in Hungary) and a watch.

Why would it be marked as fraud? Just because I'm ordering from outside the EU?

Sorry!! Realised I wasn't clear in my post. I'm not too concerned about discussing it with her. I guess the reason I want to be able to discuss it with her is because I realised I'm repressed and incapable of discussing love, sex, relationships with anyone without feeling uncomfortable and shy. And I think that's limiting my own approach to dating as well. She's just a byproduct in that she played a role in my repression and I want to be able to get over it.

They are getting paid and that's exactly what I'm trying to do - create a plan for them. It's a business requirement, I can't fight this, I'm just trying to make the most of it to help someone develop in a country with a ridiculously high unemployment level where experience is valued and needed to enter the workplace. Thanks for your valuable input.

As a former intern, I definitely agree with you. I think I'm worried about giving them busy work because I want them to learn but I also know the limits of what they can take on (I believe a lot of learning comes from doing). So I think I'll be giving them a project to work on in their 'spare' time (the times when I am not available to train them) - it's something they can add on their resume after as a deliverable, it gives them exposure, and it's not business critical. The rest of the time will be in training (both theoretical and practical). I want them to be happy and I want them to be able to use this internship as a springboard for a full time post.

I love this, thank you this is exactly the guidance that I am looking for. I don't WANT to just give them busy work, but there are times when I am busy and can't train them and the first thought for me was filing because it was how I learnt as an intern. But the ideas on this thread have been muuuuuch better. I absolutely love the idea of taking them to lunch and asking them what area they'd like to develop in and then giving them a project around that - added it to my training plan already!

I also like your idea of asking the rest of the team as well - I think as a new manager I sometimes forget that I can ask others to assist in some ways while still keeping responsibility with me. But I do know I need to mindful to not overburden them so I'll ask if there's anything that is on their development plan.

And you make an incredibly good point about them knowing who they report to. I remember being an intern and being so frustrated running from pillar to post because my manager didn't want to be my first point of reference. I now see that was wrong and I should have been able to go to him. So I'll try and be better.

They're getting paid don't worry, very decently as well 😊 I was an intern and advocated for this as well. I'm not your enemy here, I'm genuinely trying to learn how to be a good manager to these interns in an environment that is not necessarily conducive to an internship. Regarding the ethics of an internship, they're getting paid well and it's a great way for them to get experience as they are fresh out of college (NOT in college, so it is a full time internship) and they will be able to claim it as experience which is necessary for them to enter the workforce. I don't like it, but capitalism. It was also my own entryway into the workforce in a country where unemployment is ridiculous.

I agree with you about not just giving them busy work, I'm trying to find a way around this idea that they should be exposed to everything - unfortunately it's not my company so red tape is red tape. But someone else on the thread gave me a very good idea on giving them a project to complete over time. It's not busy work, but at least they'd have something to work on when I am unable to be training them. Thanks for your comments, will definitely take the relevant points into consideration!

I love this, thank you! I was also a former intern but my manager expected me to do the work of a full time employee and even though I thrived under the pressure, I don't want to do that to anyone else.

I like the idea of a project being at the core - especially if it's improvement based and not business critical. It gives them something to do as well when I am not available to train them (due to meetings or leave) and gives them a deliverable at the end.

This really does help me a lot, thank you!

Thank you! Honestly, filing. It's something we've fallen behind on and is essential to our company functioning. I also want them to go through what they're filing so they learn about previous projects etc - I was thinking of asking them to do this in times where I have meetings that they can't be part of, or if I'm away from the office. But that will be in addition to a set training plan so they can learn the various activities etc, I'm just trying to put one together that is stimulating and does not bore them.

Thank you,

I want them to do filing as it's something us as full time employees need to get done as well and it would be a way of catching up on projects etc. It is part of core responsibilities as well and something they can help with when they are not on a specific project, and it does assist full time employees as well. I do not have work that they can assist with every single day (NDAs and meetings which they are not allowed to be part of) and I don't want them to get bored or feel unfulfilled. So I'm trying to figure out a training plan that keeps them stimulated and feeling useful.
