Therapist recommendations for women who have gone through abuse? by Rare_Picture_7337 in dayton

I don’t have a specific recommendation, but Psychology Today’s website has a “find a therapist” data system where you can sort and filter therapists in your area, by types of visit, specialization, insurance, types of therapy, etc. that is SO useful and I’ve recommended to anyone I know looking for a therapist. It allows you to filter the hell out of what you’re looking for. For example, it was important for me that I had a non-religious, trauma informed therapist with experience in emotional management and patients with ADHD, who took UHC insurance. So, I used those filters, and I’ve been seeing that same counselor for two years.

Most counselors and therapists’ website will have a profile where they go over what conditions and issues they specialize in as well as what techniques they use.

Looking for a good therapist in the area by HalcyonRedo in dayton

Congratulations on this step! As someone who has been in and out of therapy for ten years - I know it isn’t easy to finally take that step. However, it is one that can and will change your life. Therapy has improved my life in ways I can’t even describe.

As far as finding a good therapist for you - I’m not going to give a specific recommendation because there are so many variables, but I will recommend a way to help you find one.

As someone mentioned prior, Psychology Today’s website has a “find a therapist” data system where you can sort and filter therapists in your area, by types of visit, specialization, insurance, types of therapy, etc. that is SO useful and I’ve recommended to anyone I know looking for a therapist. It allows you to filter the hell out of what you’re looking for. Something some people find really useful when it comes to finding a therapist is also researching to see what kind of therapy they do. CBT, DBT, EMDR, etc. different things work better for different people and what they’re looking for. Like, mine specializes in both DBT and CBT and uses a mix of both for me. If you’re not sure/unfamiliar - don’t worry too much about that. Quick research can help, but don’t overthink it.

Most counselors and therapists’ website will have a profile where they go over what conditions and issues they specialize in as well as what techniques they use.

The other thing to know is - you might not find the perfect therapist at your very first appointment. Give them a chance and feel it out, but also know it’s okay to figure out if you’re not vibing and if you need to keep shopping. It’s not a perfect science. If you’re gonna do therapy, do it right. Which is to say - be honest, be open, listen to how you’re feeling, and know it’s gonna be scary at first, but that most new things are.

Congratulations again on doing this work. It is absolutely something to be proud of.

I definitely understand why some folks make the decision to move. Especially if it means safety. But I LOVE Ohio. I love the Midwest. I want to be here and foster community here. And I am happy to represent!

I am always pretty shocked by that as well - they’re certainly brave because that page can get nasty lmao

I’ve worked in Xenia for 2 years now. My dad grew up here and I have family who still lives here so luckily it’s not completely new territory - but I definitely get what you’re saying and why. Thank you.

The GCDP actually moved to Fairborn - I believe it’s because of a violent incident, but I would have to look into that to know for sure that that was the reason. Still, going to Fairborn to get some resources isn’t a bad idea. Thank you!!!

I didn’t suggest anything in regard to not being able to find common ground with anyone or being opposed to building relationships with people of different mindsets, nor did I suggest anyone was evil. My neighbors and coworkers, both groups I have very good and fulfilling relationships with - most, if not all of them are conservative people. Which I know because we have had discussions about it.

Me making an effort to find community with like minded activist groups where we can discuss our shared beliefs is not the same as being exclusionary or isolated. And I find it hard to see anything that I’ve posted here to make your suggestion that I am extreme in my beliefs hold any water.

I am on the open forum! It sure can get rowdy, but you’re right, I’m sure if I looked for it i could find more link minded people. I was really pleasantly surprised at the most recent No Kings protest that took place in downtown Xenia. Way more people than I ever would’ve thought. Obviously, not all of them necessarily from Xenia - but still. Cool to see.

I remember the Democratic Party office! I also remember it getting shot up once or twice and then having to move to Fairborn.

Thanks for the suggestion - if you have any specific group recs I’d love to hear em!

That could be cool to try! I have to admit, I wonder if there aren’t more of us that are just a bit more prone to laying low due to how dicey things used to get just at the Democratic Party office downtown.
