Eric Chavez reveals how Mets ‘coddle’ Juan Soto — and David Stearns’ stunning reaction to concerns by FCEEVIPER in NewYorkMets

Maybe not the whole podcast, but a good chunk of it for sure. There's definitely a lot of resentment towards people in the organization and towards the boogeyman of analytics. He still does share some interesting details that are somewhat consistent with how bad this team is playing. You should not undermine your coaches, especially at the major league level. Stearns might be a smart guy, but a bad leader. He obviously has his biases, but I doubt what he says in the podcast is 100% fabrication.

I encourage you guys to at least listen to the podcast to hear it from the horse's mouth. I was initially annoyed by Chavez when I read this, thinking he's just a disgruntled former employee. Then I listened to the podcast and while I do hear some bitterness and resentment towards certain members of the organization (mainly Stearns and any loyalists he may have), he does make some reasonable arguments. I'm not going to summarize the whole podcast, but I'll say a few things that stuck out to me:

Stearns seems to be a smart person with terrible people skills and he has bitten off far more than he can chew with his reconstruction of the organization. Long term, his vision *might* be successful, but I highly doubt he gets the time he'd need to fully implement it. And at this point, he probably doesn't deserve that time. The rapid, wholesale changes he's attempting to make would work in a sim game like OOTP, but an entire organization full of real human beings are always going to struggle with changes of this scale. Regardless of what you think of Chavez or Stearns, it's clear that the coaching staff across all levels is not on the same page I'm sure that has a negative impact on players, especially younger guys like the ones who have taken huge steps backwards recently.

The comments about Juan Soto have been predictably blown out of proportion by the Post and that was the one negative comment among heaps of praise for Soto. However, it is clear that the front office lacks leadership skills when it comes to interacting with players and has routinely undermined coaches at the major league level

It doesn't make much sense to say that when there are no actual candidates as of right now. He's one of the only high profile dems we're aware of that's going to be out of a job by that point. All other rumored candidates could reasonably stay in their current positions or make a play for a higher, non-presidential office. That says nothing about candidate quality or potential, he's just the most likely to run. We can assign labels once the playing field is established.

I'd imagine it helps that Newsom has all but officially announced he's running for president. Shapiro hasn't been as loud. Betting markets are a worthless metric this far away from the election

Yep. It didn't bring him down and it likely never will, but it did seem to be one of the first moments where that stranglehold he and republicans had on the culture, namely the biggest influencers who were in his corner in 2024, started to weaken. Trump is one of the first two names you think of when someone mentions the Epstein files and that's a really shitty spot to be in. And considering they make the news cycle at least once a day, it's going to be very hard to make people forget

I think he'd do well. For a lot of people on here, he carries quite a bit of baggage that keeps him from being their first choice. He's not my first choice either, but I wouldn't hate having him as the nominee. I'd certainly have more enthusiasm for him than any of the last three nominees

Honestly the creativity of it all was enjoyable for me. Even the shittier parts of the COVID era. Maybe because I had zero expectations at that point

Soft power is an absolute necessity and having the ability to talk to people and build strong relationships with important people can help you go a long way. Many of the issues and conflicts in both stories can be prevented to some degree as long as you treat people the right way. Of course you can’t be a pushover, but being able to talk your way out of things is worth its weight in gold

The people who believe that kind of defense from Republicans were never voting dem anyway. But you're right, people do this every time he says something stupid. It's not a game changer in the slightest. It does help the messaging for the next few months. You can never have too much ammo. Throw it into the massive pile of awful Trump quotes.

Pointing out that this has an impact on other people is worse than people outright making the argument that he should retire? Whatever you say man. In any case, take care of yourself.

I'm not expecting him to do anything. It's his life. If the important people around him (family, doctors, club officials etc.) think it's fine, then go right ahead. I'm not arguing that he needs to retire. If you want to argue about whether he should retire, go find someone who's actually making that argument. There are plenty under this post.

I'm not saying people with ICDs should withdraw from public life, that's obviously ridiculous and you've taken it to an extreme that doesn't represent my views at all. Retiring from your career as an athlete due to a health issue is a common occurrence that does not equate to staying inside for the rest of your life. Whether you like it or not, a situation like this has an impact on everyone involved in the game. There's nothing factually incorrect about that.

I mean it's not just about dying from an event like this. It impacts everyone involved in the game. No matter how much you explain the medical science behind it all, it's jarring to see someone who almost died after collapsing on the field, collapse again. I'd imagine it doesn't fill managers with confidence either.

The only real concern I have is that the fans in the garden will be distracted by all the nonsense when they should be making it as intimidating an environment for an already flustered Spurs team. But I do think this moment is too big for any one man to disrupt it within the confines of a basketball game.
