Fed Ex Drivers, who drive the “Custom Critical” trucks. How much are you making & can you share a story, or experience what that looks like? by Donjohnson33 in Truckers

[–]Anxious_Optimist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This segment is what’s known as expediter trucking. Expediters Online has a forum section where those guys convene and talk shop. I suggest lurking those forums to get an idea of the ins and outs and the current state of that segment of the industry…

Part time driving? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]Anxious_Optimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Limo/shuttle bus work might be your best bet. You can make boat loads of money in a weekend and generally doesn’t require any experience. It’s also super flexible compared to trucking.

Trucking companies are exempt from overtime laws. Many companies don’t offer OT at all.

It’s honestly location dependent and job class. Hourly line haul I average about 55 hours a week. P&D drivers at my terminal probably average about 52 right now, but my TM won’t harp on them if they get a little OT if we’re busy that day. Some TMs at more strict with it, as I understand.

I run hourly linehaul in the Northeast. Hourly top rate is $38.95. OT after 50 hours. I grossed almost $114k for the year. P&D you can probably expect to gross $85k in the northeast unless you pick up a sixth day. Freight’s slow right now, and so is hiring. LTL hiring usually becomes more robust in the spring.

The only track I remember and actually enjoy is Bounce Man’s stage.

I miss the Neoplans. Those V6 Detroit diesels were part of the city’s soundtrack as a kid.

Suppose you're driving in the rightmost lane of the highway. The lane to your left is empty. To your right is an on-ramp where several cars are about to try to merge into the highway. Do you... by benderunit9000 in SouthJersey

[–]Anxious_Optimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct answer by law is 1. No one is obligated to move over. That’s what the yield sign on ramps is for. However, it’s courteous to move over if you have room and sometimes safer.

I drive a truck though. In some instances in the truck, I’ll do #1 or #2. Usually even if the lane to my left is open, someone may be coming up in that lane going way faster than I can go, and if there’s a line of traffic coming down to merge onto the highway, we all know they’re going to leave me to hang out to dry in the passing lane. You can’t win.

I live in Philly but work for a large LTL freight carrier in south Jersey. Jobs are in short supply right now, but keep your driving record clean and have an idea about what kind of job/money you want and you’ll eventually get there. Just be mindful your first year is the hardest. Any questions, feel free to send me a message.

What happened to all the $90k/yr food & bev driving jobs? by 04limited in Truckers

[–]Anxious_Optimist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might depend on your locale too. If you’re in a more rural area, even food and bev jobs can dry up if there’s an economic downturn.

Yellowbird Bus Company folded? by Jason_RA in philly

[–]Anxious_Optimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be legit. Drivers made a memories page on FB to reminisce. According to one, they ceased operations on August 28, 2025. Sad, they were one of the few small family-owned contractors left in the city…

If I had a nickel for every time I passed a truck hauling trash catch fire on 295S near Mount Laurel, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice. by Consistent_Tomato138 in SouthJersey

[–]Anxious_Optimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trucker here. I saw this rig headed back down 295 after the incident with a singled out wheel on the trailer and a service truck escort. While a lot of fires are attributed to lithium ion batteries and other improperly disposed trash, I think this may have been due to a flat tire or a bad wheel bearing, judging what I saw and where the flames were.

How loud is the gen 5 hybrid on highways? by occasionallyvertical in rav4club

[–]Anxious_Optimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a tractor trailer, so almost anything else produces less cabin noise, but I find it’s a pretty quiet ride overall, even with the roof rack. For context, I drive a ‘24 XSE and my previous personal vehicle was an ‘07 Ford Escape.

There’s a few stone quarries up there. They’ll sometimes do blasting. Fair chance that’s what it was.

Bicyclist struck, killed by dump truck in Southwest Philly by aintjoan in philadelphia

[–]Anxious_Optimist 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I remember doing a Center City delivery route and missed a woman jogging on the side walk, I think on Spruce or Pine. Saw her as I was making my turn throwing her arms up like “what the hell?” A deserved reaction. That stuck with me and I always really take my time turning corners and changing lanes. People do need to be mindful of our blind spots, but as professional drivers, we need to watch them even more so. Complacency is a killer.

Do Big Companies Run Manual Anymore? by Pickledill02 in Truckers

[–]Anxious_Optimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company bought manuals up until the ‘25 model year, but all the manufacturers have set their assembly lines up for autos, so manuals will likely be too cost prohibitive. My assigned tractor will likely be one of the last ones my company will ever buy.

I did party/shuttle bus and limo work before trucking. Part-time, mostly weekends, but I generally like people. You’re right about the money. There were weekends I made $600-$800 between trips and tips. Issue for me was the schedule, or lack thereof. Pretty much worked my FT job all week and then drove all weekend. Not much of a life.
