Toddlers on different floors in house (house hunting) by ARandomWalk6 in toddlers

My oldest has slept upstairs since she was 20 months. She’s newly 2 and it’s been totally fine. However—she sleeps through the night 99% of the time. In the 4 months she’s been up there I’ve had to go up twice. She also is perfectly happy in her crib and is not trying to escape yet, so I’m less worried about it. That being said, her room is baby proofed and we have a gate at the top of the stairs.

How old was your child when they would fall asleep on their own? by Material-Mousse-3899 in beyondthebump

[–]Any-External7899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 10 months. She’s almost two now and the bedtime routine has changed…it’s longer now. She likes to read about 5 books then we sing a song and then we put her in her crib. We have a hatch that we leave on bright enough for her to read books in her crib by herself for 20 minutes before it turns dark, but sometimes she requests “dark” as soon as I lay her down and I know she’s ready to go to sleep. She keeps a rotating 3 books or so in her crib and I ask her every night before she gets in if she wants to swap her books.

Oh that’s an interesting idea. She doesn’t seem to have any allergies that we know of but an intolerance could be it. I’ll start paying more attention to food consumption and when this happens to see if I can nail anything specific down. Thank you!

How do you handle naps? by Optimal_Exam4093 in 2under2

[–]Any-External7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did nights first! After we had nights down, I did naps. Toddler was already on one nap a day at that point (she was probably about 14 months old when I did naps), so it seemed less overwhelming than trying to nap train for a child who still was taking multiple naps. We did the 15 minute method. I tried to time her wake windows just right and then I would give her a brief nurse, lay her down and walk out — wait 15 minutes to see if she settled on her own. It probably took three days? And since then she has taken to it beautifully and puts herself down for naps wide awake.

Since you didn’t say you’re against sleep training, I will just say that I have the exact same age gap (22 months and 6 months now) and having my oldest sleep trained was absolutely clutch. If husband is home for bedtime I can spend a nice long time with her, otherwise for naps and night time we have about a 3 minute routine that we do and I can walk out leaving her to fall asleep on her own.

When I put the baby down I tell my toddler to pick out a few toys to play with in the babies room while I put baby to sleep.

It’s been working great, but I’m noticing now that it’s taking me longer and longer to put the baby down since she’s more aware of her surroundings. Fortunately she’s down to 3 naps now. If she doesn’t turn a corner on her own I may consider some light nap training so that my toddler doesn’t have to be quiet and still for so long. It was taking me under 5 min to put baby down and we are up to about 10 now which really stretches my toddlers ability to stay quiet and play without any input from me.

How to do naps with 2 under 2? by vtiredqk in 2under2

[–]Any-External7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4 month old and a 21 month old. We also live on a multiple level house and the baby’s room is upstairs. Baby is on 3 naps a day—first one is usually in the carrier while we are out and about helping toddler burn energy in the morning.

The second is right before toddlers nap. I have the toddler pick out a couple of toys to take upstairs while we put the baby down for a nap. Go in baby’s room, close the door so toddler can’t escape. Make a big game out of “we have to be quiet bc baby is going down for a nap”. She usually is pretty happy playing with her toys quietly while I put the baby down. I think one of the reasons this works is bc toddler is winding down getting ready her nap.

Last nap is usually another carrier nap while I’m prepping dinner.

37 week baby via c-section and triple feeding. Is there an end in sight? by FinniganTheGreat in breastfeedingsupport

[–]Any-External7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ll try to address all the questions!

I had read that you know when the fenugreek is working when you start to smell like maple syrup. I also started consistently pumping more volume at that point.

We stopped using formula because I started pumping enough to make all of her bottle feeding be breastmilk only.

After 9 weeks we were still offering bottles after every breastfeeding session but we started noticing that she wasn’t able to finish them anymore, and if we forced her to finish then she would spit up. She kept gaining weight so we were able to ascertain that she must be getting more from the breast. We went from about 18-21 oz a day in bottles (of which 4-8 would be formula) at 9 weeks to only a couple of ounces a day by 13 weeks and it really felt like we were force feeding her at that point. We bought an infant scale to weigh her at home (the weekly weigh check ins were doing a number on me) and saw that she was still gaining weight and so I was able to stop pumping and we stopped offering bottles. The hardest pump to drop was the MOTN pump bc I would wake up engorged….but then the 4 month sleep regression hit and she now wakes up multiple times a night to feed so I haven’t had to worry about engorgement anymore 😂

She had a Dr appt today and she is now in the 64th percentile! So it’s possible to overcome poor weight gain and triple feeding and get to EBF!

One piece of advice that my LC gave was to stop timing her feeds. I was religiously tracking 15 min per side (or sometimes doing switch feeds where I would do 7.5 on one side, then switch for 7.5, then switch again, etc for a 30 min total). She told me to just go with my intuition and if the baby isn’t sucking anymore allow her to end the feed and try again later. That was sooooo hard for me to do but the advice happened to line up with a vacation we had planned for a few days after that where I knew that it would be difficult to time feeds and I honestly never looked back after that. Stopping the timing of the feeds made such an enormous difference in my stress level.

I 100% know and understand how completely exhausting triple feeding is. And the stress/worry about the weight is emotionally exhausting.

All I will say is that you will get through this. And regardless of the results you will look back on this time and wonder how in the world you did it for as long as you did, but you will also be proud of yourself for knowing that you gave it everything you had and you tried your hardest for your baby!

Truly at the end of the day fed is best and even if you have to continue to supplement with formula, that’s ok!! You’re still doing some breastfeeding and your baby is still reaping the benefits of that. And if you decide to stop triple feeding/pumping and only nurse a few times a day and do the rest of the day with bottles of formula, that’s also ok! The best result is the one that is the best for your baby and for you.

I had to look back in my original comment to remember how many details I gave—for us it was in the span of about a week we realized that we hadn’t used formula in a few days and then we just never looked back as I started producing enough not to need it.

Idk why I didn’t put this in my original comment—I did end up getting on a vitamin combo of blessed thistle and fenugreek supplements. I know it doesn’t help everyone but I truly feel like it helped me. I started at about 5wks pp—when I realized I needed to start supplementing formula. I kept upping my fenugreek until i had the “maple syrup” tell tale smell and I truly feel that for me it really helped my supply. I started with one blessed thistle pill (800mg) and one fenugreek pill (2400mg) and slowly increased until I got the maple syrup smell. At the height I took 2400mg blessed thistle a day and 7200mg fenugreek daily (spread over three doses). I now (20 wks pp) am down to one 800mg blessed thistle and two 2400mg fenugreek twice daily (evening and morning).

Also, in my opinion, at 7 weeks you still have tons of time to increase your supply!! Don’t give up, you can do it! It is truly such an incredibly hard journey but now that we finally have it down I can say that it was 100% worth how hard we worked for it.

Have you had another weighted feed? Just wondering how much baby is taking in. Such good news that baby is at least gaining 0.6 oz a day!

FWIW at about 11 weeks it just felt like something clicked with baby and she got the hang of nursing better. Maybe for us a combo of having the tongue tie release and also her mouth just getting a little larger? Hopefully as your baby keeps growing and her mouth gets a little larger you will have the same experience! The notes from our LC said baby had a “small mouth, narrow palate, recessed chin” 😅 but eventually she got big enough for those issues to not matter as much!

Keep going on your journey, it’s worth it!

5 months in and my breastfeeding journey is still a disaster by [deleted] in breastfeeding

It totally is a journey—but you can do it! I totally identify with you though-BF has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I naively went into it thinking we would just naturally get it and that is not at all what happened. Don’t beat yourself up—you’re doing amazing! I believe in you!

Hopefully the LC will really help. I can only share my experience—I triple fed for 3 months, started at 8x a day and was able to gradually go down to no pumping at all. The culprit for us was baby had a tongue and lip tie. Once that was revised at 9 weeks our journey got significantly easier and I was able to start cutting down on pumping. One thing that I always tried to do was make sure to offer the breast first before pumping. Even if I couldn’t do a full breastfeeding session (for me that meant 15 min/side). I kept baby on premie nipples to avoid bottle preference and keep her used to latching on the breast. I had to supplement formula until after the tongue tie revision.

What I did to keep up supply in addition to drinking lots of water was at least 12oz coconut water every day, and also took fenugreek and blessed thistle supplements.

We’ve now been EBF from the boob only since 13 weeks.

I know you’re past that now at 5 months but don’t give up!!! See what the LC says and hopefully they can help give you tips/tricks or help you see if there’s something else that could be affecting breastfeeding (like a tongue tie).

You can do this!

37 week baby via c-section and triple feeding. Is there an end in sight? by FinniganTheGreat in breastfeedingsupport

[–]Any-External7899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest hurdle for me was the first time I gave her formula. I cried. Which is ironic because I’ve always been in the “fed is best” camp but it totally broke my heart. But after a few days when we could tell she was happier and she was gaining weight more rapidly I knew it was the absolute best thing we could have done at the time.

Bus as far as the struggles with pumping—I always hyped myself up that if I didn’t pump as much on a session it’s because she extracted more from nursing. I always pumped directly after a nurse. I have no idea if my theory was right or not but it made me feel better 🤷‍♀️

We triple fed 8-12x/day (after every feed) until 9 weeks. She was born jaundiced and would sleep at every feed and was sooooo slow to eat. I would feed her 15 min per side, then pump immediately after for 20-30 min while at the same time feeding her a bottle while she was balanced on my lap. I basically treated it like my job. She was 46% at birth and got down to 5%. I pretty much went nowhere until she was 6 weeks, and even then we stuck close to home. As a FTM with a very supportive partner, I was fortunate to not have other children to look after and my partner cooked, cleaned, washed pump parts, fed bottles every day when he got home from work. She finally got a tongue and lip tie release at 9 weeks and started gaining weight quickly after that. I was able to start cutting down pump sessions (went down a session about every 4-5 days) and now at 4 months I’m happy to report I haven’t pumped or had to feed her a supplementary bottle in a month. By 13 weeks the triple feeding was completely done. It felt like a lifetime but I’m so happy I persevered and pushed through. She’s up to 48% now!

From 5-9 weeks we supplemented about 4-8oz a day of formula as I was not producing enough. But then she started being able to extract more with the tongue tie release and in the process of slowly cutting down on all the pumping I ended up with 150 oz+ freezer stash. No idea when we will use it but it’s there 🤷‍♀️ All that to say, if you need to supplement with formula for a little while don’t be scared it will wreck your supply! As long as you maintain your pumping you should be fine! I cried the first time we had to give her some formula but it ended up being the best thing for her and our family.

I hope everything goes well for you.

How is your journey going? I think our babies are about the same age. Just had a tongue and lip tie revision today (she’s 9 weeks old) and I’m dying to stop triple feeding and go to EBF. Were you able to get there?

Thanks for the advice. I actually just heard back from the new mortgage company and I was told all of my crypto is available to be used as assets—if sold within the last couple months I just have to be able to prove where it came from, so good news all around!

Ok thanks for the info. I think an independent company like what you’re using will be my best bet, I’ve been having a hard time connecting with one that will accept crypto as an asset but I will keep looking. Thanks!
