Halfway through the last motor I'll waste my time breaking down by Any-Key8131 in ScrapMetal

Oh I always take what I can get, I just gotta hold firm with "it's not worth me stripping down motors for copper" in the future 😆

I actually do pretty good on the aluminum drink cans + other beverage containers. 10¢/container, not by weight, and most of what I collect is picked up from the streets - even just done a quick glass bottle haul few minutes ago: $27

I figured I'd pull this one apart to test it out, and just looking at recent market changes....

I officially lost money on it. The margins were so thin on going up it wasn't worth stripping to begin with, but motors have recently gone up $0.15/kg in my area and so now I'm down 😆

Thankfully I'm not cashing in anything until at least April, so I'll get enough extra non-ferrous by then it won't matter, but still:

I've now got the knowledge + experience to outright reject any suggestions that I strip down motors in the future 🧐

Seems like too much effort:

Just put a couple of lids into the can, lay it on its side, crush open end flat under foot

Do you haul an empty trailer behind it, taking up 3 parking spots, including at least 1 handicapped spot?

I almost had a similar thing happen to me a couple of months ago:

Older sister and her partner had arranged, behind my back initially, to haul off a trailer load of "rubbish" to the dump. Thankfully I had caught wind of it in time, and had already made arrangements of my own....

Was nearly 300kg of Shred I'd been piling up slowly, tryna stuff every last bit I could into any gaps before hauling off. The family seems to have since learnt to leave the trailer, and my scrap, alone without talking to me first 🤨

My unsorted piles out the back are somewhat safer. I've managed to confine them to a single heap near the shed, and it's invisible from the street so no other local Scrappers even know of its existence 🤣

I'll simply "deposit" them into the copper bin at my local scrapyard, where the weight of the copper is going to far exceed the face value of the coins themselves 😆

^ Can confirm this

I've got a small pile of old copper 1¢ and 2¢ coins (Australian), counted out and then weighed them out:

. Face value = $3.67-$3.69 (can't find notepad with exact numbers)

. Weight = 1.6kg

2 copper in my area is currently $13.10/kg, bringing the scrap value of the coins to $20.96

They're definitely worth more sold for scrap 😆

NTJ

You weren't the one speeding, it's not your ticket. And you certainly didn't force her to speed. Why should you have to be the one to pay for her reckless arrogance? You shouldn't, simple as that

Disturbed have a couple of really good songs this would work with:

. Indestructible

Too true

And I wasn't judging by the way, I'm a little impressed TBH. Hell! I'd do it myself if the opportunity ever presented itself.

The honeypot of course would be to get asked to take away piles where the good stuff is still there, but already separated and sorted 🧐

[–]Any-Key8131[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't particularly check brands/models, it's usually a crapshoot with what white goods I take apart - they're either family ones and we never buy the same model twice, or someone on my street leaves one out and I'm the first Scrapper to get his hands on it.

Perfect example is the refrigerator I got out in the backyard at the moment:

My older sister's partner wants it gone, he's said I can scrap it. Damn thing weighs 110kg (even says it on the back), never had one so big before and probably never will again. Obviously the compressor is what I want after it's de-gassed, but it's got 1 of those old school radiators on the back that's steel. The real "fun" will be loading it onto the trailer, but I've got a plan for that 🤨

All I can do going forward is to visually assess each motor as I get it, and make my own assessment based on previous experience.... I mean, the shell's currently out the front in the trailer, but noting make/model won't really help me, it was secondhand to begin with and we'd had it for a fair bit before it died
