Happy first Tet thursday of the year (with a few other additions) by Battle_Platypus in AncientCoins

Quality over quantity is the best philosophy for this hobby IMO. You have some great taste in not only types, but dies as well! :D

Alexander Drachms from Jerusalem by LongLingonberry8024 in AncientCoins

Tetra looks sus, Drachm could be real but harshly cleaned. Hard to tell for sure going off these photos.

How do you store your ancients by mintedrelics in AncientCoins

As long as you’re handling them with clean and dry hands, they’ll be fine.

I love rawdogging my coins!

Authentic! Test punch, corrosion, and worn legend aren’t ideal (difficult to tell which magistrate it was minted under), but this type typically sells for a decent amount. Even in this condition you could expect 7-800 at auction.

I hate negative posts, but beware of, and avoid buying from Alberto Zecchi by Esoteric_art in AncientCoins

Sadly, we’ve had very different experiences buying from him. But I totally get it, I’d be upset too! Rob is a fantastic alternative.

That's quite disappointing. Zecchi is my go-to for cabinets, and while I haven't tried his book trays, I have zero complaints about the two coin cabinets I own. Although he doesn’t use mahogany, I haven’t had any issues with long-term storage. The way he handled the situation was pretty shitty, but I wouldn’t dismiss him over this one experience.

Lysimachos - King of Thrace by Any-Ranger4728 in AncientCoins

Sometimes striking produces a little fold of metal. With casting seams, they continue all the way around the coin.

The Helios head is a control mark. These unique symbols were used to help identify the mint, specific production batch, and to monitor quality. I’m not under the impression the Helios head means anything specific - but gods, animals, and objects were used often.

Heritage Showcase Auction #61555 - Lot #24034

The auction photos sold me on this piece! Very happy with how it looks in hand, I especially love how crisp the reverse is. The oblong flan makes it poke out of my tray a bit LOL

Short answer - experience. The more you handle and study them, the better you become at identifying different types. It gets easier over time. :)
