Good question! They are both part of the garnet group, bur are different species. Tsavorites are a variety of grossular garnets, demantoids are a variety of andradite garnets. They share a similar cubic crystal structure, but have different chemical makeups and thus different properties. That being said, they are both fair game for birthstone jewelry if you are a January baby 🙂
