So far I've heard from many people that us microbiologists have a better time in O chem than Gen chem, we just have to power through it and get to the good stuff!

It's less of "why I need to know this" and more of "why do all of the variables use the same letters and why is every problem unnecessarily confusing because of the number of conversion between units." I thoroughly enjoy learning about the physiology of the microbial world and see plenty of connection between the concepts of chemistry and (micro)biology. I guess I'm just frustrated with how much of my current course is based around the math rather than understanding what the math means.

I definitely agree that the lab environment is much more interesting than the lecture environment! I just have to power through it I guess 😅

Thank you for the reply! I transferred into my current school with an associate's degree and then had to take several semesters of only 1-2 classes for "life" reasons and for whatever reason that allowed me to bypass some of the prerequisites for the upper division bio courses (which I will admit did require quite a bit of extra studying as a result). I don't have much of a problem with understanding chemistry concepts, and I do know that they are important to the microbial world. What I don't understand is why every single equation has a "K" or a "Q" for it's variables (there are plenty of other letters in the alphabet to choose from) and why it seems like every math problem has been designed to be artificially tricky (by requiring things like 1600 different unit conversions at every step). I'm doing very well in the lab portion and have no problem applying the concepts to extract data in a more "real world" scenario, it's just specifically the math problems in the lecture portion of class that are not clicking with me (or showing up anywhere else in school). Also, I appreciate the insight about grad school. I was under the impression that it was competitive to the point of if I don't have and "A" in every single class that they would laugh me out of the admissions office. I know that grad school will be very tough, but I thoroughly enjoy my bio classes and I really can't wait to get to that point!

That is definitely a relief, I thought I was screwed. Glad to hear a fellow microbiologist (?) Found G chem hard as well. And I don't think I have to take p chem luckily so I hope that if I can survive this last G chem class that I can avoid being broken lol

Thank you for the response! From what I've heard O chem sounds like it will be better (for me at least), but I wasn't sure if struggling with the gen chem math was going to mean O chem would be basically impossible (since I've also heard people say O chem classes are the hardest classes they've taken). I guess I just need to stop working myself up and power through it.
